  • How much can Brian Lewerke improve after a breakout 2017 season?

    When coach Mark Dantonio was asked during a press conference about Brian Lewerke, the first sentence of his response included comparisons to Kirk Cousins and Connor Cook. Lewerke was entering his redshirt sophomore season with all of four games of experience, an 0-2 record as a starter and suffered a broken leg the year before. Cook and Cousins are the top two passers in program history and both now in the NFL.

  • Brian Lewerke caps breakout sophomore season with record-setting bowl performance

    After trailing 3-0 at the end of the first quarter, No. 16 Michigan State (10-3, 7-2 Big Ten) rattled off 35 straight points in a 42-17 win against No. 18 Washington State (9-4, 6-3 Pac-12). Lewerke shook off the rough start, as well a big hit in the second half, to close his breakout season with an impressive performance. Lewerke finished 13-for-21 passing for 213 yards and three touchdowns and had 14 carries for 73 yards. His three touchdown passes tied a program bowl game record while his rushing total set a new high for a Michigan State quarterback in a bowl game.
