  • Brian Lewerke’s parents have racked up 45K miles chasing son’s dreams

Brian Lewerke tried to do the math in his head. The wrinkles forming on his forehead showed the wheels were churning. Michigan State’s sophomore quarterback even used his fingers to count. He was attempting to add up the number of miles his parents have traveled this fall to attend his games. The answer is 45,610.Phoenix to East Lansing is a haul.

  • Comparing Brian Lewerke’s sophomore year with Connor Cook and Kirk Cousins

Of all the things to come out of this season for Michigan State, the development of Brian Lewerke may be the most important. Certainly the defense was outstanding, and the young receiving corps looks like it is very legit. But without good quarterback play, there is only so far you can go.

  • Brian Lewerke not worried about decline in passing attack, focused on improvement at Rutgers

Three days after the outcome was decided, Mark Dantonio redefined how he previously evaluated an individual performance. The Michigan State coach on Tuesday noted he should have said quarterback Brian Lewerke showed “great game management” in the Spartans’ 17-7 win against Maryland last week.

  • Lewerke playing all right cards in MSU’s resurgence

Video games, which Brian Lewerke fancies, as do most of his Michigan State teammates who need an occasional break from football and classroom chores. The other pastime was less obvious, but perfectly understood, given that this indeed is the Midwest and this card game is a Midwest staple. Euchre.

  • Brian Lewerke’s topsy-turvy last four weeks make for some unprecedented numbers

Mark Dantonio joked after Michigan State’s 17-7 win over Maryland on Saturday night that Brian Lewerke’s last four weeks will be a bit of trivia someday. Lewerke has gone from throwing 400 or more yards in back-to-back games, including 445 against Northwestern on Oct. 28, to throwing for just 20 yards on two completions against the Terrapins.

  • Lewerke looks to bounce back vs. Maryland

In his first season as the full-time starter, quarterback Brian Lewerke has had his share of ups and downs. After back-to-back weeks of throwing for 400 yards and adding six touchdowns, the sophomore struggled in Michigan State’s 48-3 loss at Ohio State. Lewerke finished 18-for-36 for 131 yards while throwing a pair of interceptions.

  • Brian Lewerke knows he needs to take hits, still deliver accurate throws

Following a 48-3 blowout loss at Ohio State last week, Brian Lewerke said the game tape should be viewed once and then tossed out. The Michigan State redshirt sophomore quarterback “reluctantly” watched it late Sunday night and his reaction was exactly what he anticipated – poor execution by the Spartans. That included Lewerke, who had one of the roughest outings of his career and finished 18-for-36 passing for 131 yards, zero touchdowns, two interceptions and a fumble.

  • Brian Lewerke learns from rough day

Brian Lewerke feels fine after taking the biggest beating of his young Michigan State career. “I don’t get hit too much,” the sophomore quarterback said Monday. “I can only imagine what guys like (Joe) Bachie and Chris Frey are feeling.”

  • As good as he’s been, Brian Lewerke can’t beat Ohio State alone

Brian Lewerke has probably had a few extra ice bags taped to his shoulder this week and there’s probably a surplus of Icy Hot in the medicine cabinet. After the last two Saturdays, there’s no doubt his right arm is starting to feel overused.

  • Brian Lewerke’s arm iced up for Ohio State

When Michigan State reached fall camp, Brian Lewerke and Felton Davis had spent two years together in the football program. Davis, a junior wide receiver, didn’t realize until then that he had never seen Lewerke ice his arm. “I throw four passes and my arm hurts,” Davis said. “I’ve gotta ice it.” But no, Lewerke said, he didn’t do it — until he had to.  And Lewerke and the ice pack have become steady companions this season.

  • Throw Green Throw?

There is something noticeably different about the Michigan State offense in the last two games. The numbers jump out at you from the stat sheet. During the last two games, Brian Lewerke made 56 and 57 pass attempts, as opposed to attempting only 202 passes total through the first seven games. Lewerke’s career high before the Northwestern game was 51 pass attempts against Notre Dame and that was understandable since Michigan State was playing catch-up with Notre Dame for most of the game.

  • Record-breaking Brian Lewerke shakes off sore arm, ready to keep throwing

Two games, 113 throws. The record book will show Brian Lewerke attempted more passes in back-to-back games than anyone else in Michigan State history. For a quarterback, that’s an opportunity to stand out beyond the ink. However, there are consequences. “My arm was sore for sure, yesterday I was, but ice it up and we’ll be good,” Lewerke said with a smile after practice on Tuesday night.

  • Brian Lewerke joins rare company with back-to-back 400-yard games

It’s easy to forget now the state of Michigan State’s quarterback situation three weeks ago. Brian Lewerke was coming off three straight games with less than 200 yards passing. He was completing just better than 50 percent of his passes in those games (which, in fairness, included two rain-soaked contests).  Michigan State won all those three games, but did so largely with a standout defense and an adequate passing game.

  • With back-to-back 400-yard games, Brian Lewerke ‘throwing darts’ for Michigan State

When the rain started during Michigan State’s Thursday afternoon practice, the Spartans’ defense was allowed to come inside and practice in the team’s indoor practice facility. The Michigan State offense, meanwhile, was forced by coaches to stay outside for the duration, and run through its plays in the rain. Players were none too happy.

  • Brian Lewerke has the Big Ten at his mercy

You can feel it again, the rise of Michigan State football. We’ve seen this before. The light quips from the Spartans’ coach, his religious parables, the close wins in memorable settings. A defense that believes, a kicker with a personality. And a quarterback. Once Mark Dantonio gets a quarterback, perhaps no one in college football is better at making it all work, maximizing what he has. Dantonio has himself a quarterback again.
