It has been 496 days since Brian Lewerke last took a snap under center for the Michigan State Spartans. It has been even longer, 2,099 days, since he started his first fall camp as a freshman in East Lansing, though he would redshirt that season and play on the scout team while the Spartans went on to their third Big Ten title under then head coach Mark Dantonio, and earned a spot in the College Football Playoff.

Brian Lewerke is going to play at Indianapolis’ Lucas Oil Stadium after all. The former Michigan State quarterback never made it there — the home of the Big Ten Championship Game — with the Spartans, nor did he stick with the Indianapolis Colts after they invited him to a tryout last year. Lewerke will get that opportunity next month in The Spring League, where he’ll be playing for the Alphas, the league announced Monday.

In his 38th and final start for Michigan State, Brian Lewerke turned in one of the best performances of his career. He threw for 320 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 54 yards and a score while being named the Pinstripe Bowl MVP in a win against Wake Forest in New York to close last season. With that performance, Lewerke set a program record for career yards of total offense with 9,548, passing former standout quarterback Connor Cook. He also finished just two completions shy of Kirk Cousins’ program record with 723 career completions.

Brian Lewerke didn’t get drafted, but the former Michigan State quarterback might have landed in just the right spot. Getting selected in the NFL’s seven-round draft was coin flip for the Spartans’ career leader in total yards, and when Lewerke’s name wasn’t called, the expectation was he would land a free-agent deal. Two days after the draft, that deal came as Lewerke signed with the New England Patriots.

“Lewerke, to me, he’s a late-round player. He’s a seventh-round free-agent-type player for me,” NFL Network analyst Daniel Jeremiah said Thursday on a conference call. “Although I will say, I’ve talked to some folks around the league — there’s some quarterback coaches that have really fallen in love with this kid, and I say that in terms of fourth, fifth round. It would not shock me if he went a little bit higher than I thought he would.”

It must have been liberating for Brian Lewerke. Here he was all alone. Him against an electronic timer. It didn’t matter he wasn’t the fastest guy or that NFL evaluators had come to see him throw. That’s because Lewerke understood once he completed this exercise – once he ran those 40 yards in 4.95 seconds – he couldn’t really question what he’d just done or wonder what other factors may have slowed him down as he did throughout his star-crossed tenure as Michigan State’s quarterback.

Three former Michigan State Spartans – quarterback Brian Lewerke and wide receivers Darrell Stewart Jr. and Cody White – tested in front of NFL coaches, scouts and front-office personnel on Thursday for the first day of the on-field portion of the NFL Combine at Lucas Oil Stadium.
Former Michigan State football quarterback Brian Lewerke said he has no problem with the way Mark Dantonio retired as football coach. “I think it was his time,” Lewerke said Tuesday at the NFL combine. “He’s done everything for the program, basically brought it back to prominence, so I think he can do whatever he wants basically with that program. He’s won Big Ten championships. My only disappointment is that I wasn’t able to get one for him, too. So, I wish I could have.”

Lewerke is in line to make his 38th and final start for the program on Friday and has a 21-16 record in that role. He is the first player in Michigan State history to pass for at least 7,000 yards and rush for at least 1,000 in his career, ranks first in passing attempts (1,212) and is close to a couple other marks. Lewerke needs 29 completions to pass Kirk Cousins (723) and 222 yards of total offense to pass Connor Cook (9,403) for first in both categories.

Forty-Five minutes. Sometimes that is all it takes to make a lifetime’s worth of memories. Fifth-year Michigan State quarterback Brian Lewerke may not have fully understood that before. After Monday night, he won’t forget it. Neither will 15-year-old cancer patient Justin Cole.
