The Spartans were lifeless, uninspired and unimaginative, with possession of the ball again Saturday as they hosted Rutgers for senior day. Against anyone else, that performance would have sealed their fate. But against Rutgers, losers of (now) 11 in a row, two touchdowns was enough to escape with a 14-10 victory.

The script was written and Michigan State and Rutgers stuck to it with a predictably low-scoring game, but with a twist. The Spartans (7-5, 5-4 Big Ten), who were favored by 24.5 points, needed a late rally to pull out a 14-10 win at home against the Scarlet Knights (1-11, 0-9) in their regular-season finale on Saturday.

Michigan State has struggled offensively all season, and on Saturday against Rutgers, that struggle nearly led to a huge upset. Instead, the Spartans did just enough to knock off the Scarlet Knights, 14-10, on Senior Day at Spartan Stadium. With Rutgers leading, 10-7, late in the fourth quarter, junior wide receiver Cody White took a reverse pitch 22 yards for the touchdown, giving Michigan State its first lead of the game.

Michigan State will be celebrating Senior Day, where they will recognize 18 players in a pregame ceremony. The senior class was able to accomplish quite a bit, while experiencing all of the highs and lows of college football. They brought the Spartans a College Football Playoff appearance and a Big Ten Championship in 2015, along with many other accolades.

The Spartans’ offense has been their biggest albatross all season, especially since QB Brian Lewerke injured his shoulder at Penn State. It remains unclear if he will start this week or if Mark Dantonio will go back to Rocky Lombardi, who went 15 of 41 for 146 yards with an interception and a fumble in last week’s 9-6 loss at Nebraska

Michigan State hosts Rutgers on Senior Day in Spartan Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 24 at 4 p.m. Already bowl eligible, the Spartans (6-5, 4-4 Big Ten) will look to close out the regular season with seven victories. MSU fell at Nebraska last Saturday, 9-6, while the Scarlet Knights (1-10, 0-8 Big Ten) lost to Penn State, 20-7. The game will be televised nationally on FOX, with Brandon Gaudin calling play-by-play, Brian Baldinger serving as the analyst and Sarah Kustok on the sidelines.

Last game of the regular season on Saturday as the Spartans will honor their seniors at Spartan Stadium in front of the home “crowd.” Seriously though, the tickets are crazy cheap, if you are in the area and have nothing else to do, go out and give the seniors a nice send-off. The opponent is Rutgers so you’ve got that going for you too. Here’s some more to know about a school that is inexplicably part of the Big Ten now.
