Bachie Spearheading Spartan Surge
Joe Bachie continues to lead a defense that may be among the nation’s most underrated. College football’s #1 ranked defense against the run speaks for itself. Michigan State’s players-only meeting ‘was needed’ after 3-2 start to season
“I don’t think leading by example is a thing,” Bachie said after practice Tuesday night. “What? You watch extra film? You show up on time to things? That’s the right thing to do, it’s just what you’re supposed to do. That’s not leading.”

Joe Bachie: If you don’t wanna lead, get out of locker room
Joe Bachie issued a public captain’s ultimatum to his fellow Michigan State team leaders in a few different forums. On the postgame radio show: “When you’re put in a leadership position, you gotta lead. And if you don’t wanna lead, well, you better get out of that position because the train is gonna move forward.”

Joe Bachie’s next step – living in QBs’ heads
Of all the memorable moments in Joe Bachie’s relatively short Michigan State football career, one that stands out is seeing the Penn State offensive line glare at him in dismay before a snap last season. Bachie had them. He had figured out quarterback Trace McSorely’s audible play call, yelled it out and checked MSU’s defense into a plan to counter it. It was his first time doing that.

Replays of Spartans’ 2013 defense get Joe Bachie all wound up
When Joe Bachie had a break during preseason camp this month, he turned on some old game tapes. While others might have relished the break by hanging out in their room or grabbing a bite to eat with teammates, Bachie was busy watching what he believes is the best defense to play at Michigan State. That, of course, would be the unit that helped lead the Spartans to a Big Ten title and a victory in the Rose Bowl in 2013.

Linebackers a ‘good situation’ for Mark Dantonio, Michigan State
The old saying in football goes, if you have more than one quarterback you don’t have a quarterback. Or, at least, it goes something like that. Of course, the idea is that if one doesn’t stand out, that means none of the quarterbacks will excel. That same theory doesn’t apply to the linebacker position, and at Michigan State, the feeling is the Spartans have plenty of options to anchor a defense that finished second in the nation in 2017 in rush defense, allowing just more than 95 yards a game.

2018 captains shaped by failures of 2016
Khari Willis has seen what he considers great leadership at Michigan State: his freshman year, in 2015, under captains Shilique Calhoun and Riley Bullough. The Spartans won the Big Ten championship and reached the College Football Playoff that season. Willis has lived through the inverse, too, which was a significant factor in 2016, the program’s worst season of head coach Mark Dantonio’s tenure.

Michigan State football preview – the linebackers: Joe Bachie could go down in MSU lore
If you talk to people who’ve watched camp, they’ll tell you MSU’s linebackers have been special. That, of course, begins with junior middle linebacker Joe Bachie, perhaps the most complete player — in terms of physical gifts and cerebral instincts — to play that position under Mark Dantonio.

Khari Willis, Brian Lewerke, Joe Bachie named Michigan State’s 2018 captains
Mark Dantonio is entering his 12th season as Michigan State coach and believes there may be more leaders on the team now than at any point in his tenure. The top members of that group have emerged. Senior safety Khari Willis, redshirt junior quarterback Brian Lewerke, and junior linebacker Joe Bachie were named team captains, the program announced Thursday morning.

Michigan State linebackers want to become best blitzers in Dantonio era
Michigan State’s group of linebackers is so deep this fall they needed a bigger meeting room. The Spartans’ linebacker meetings during the team’s preseason camp have had nearly 20 players at times. A group that size couldn’t fit in the normal linebackers room in the Duffy Daugherty Building, so the group at the center of the Spartans’ defense had to take over a room formerly occupied by the defensive line to have enough space.

Moreover, he was voted team MVP, the first sophomore since Drew Stanton in 2004 to win the award.

Team MVP Joe Bachie headlines Michigan State linebackers
Andrew Dowell, Joe Bachie, and Chris Frey. Those were Michigan State’s starting linebackers last season – all 13 games. Good health and continuity at the position were significant changes from the 2016 season in which the Spartans started six different linebackers while limping to a 3-9 finish. They also helped lead to an improved performance for the defense.
