    The New Orleans Saints on Sunday announced three former Michigan State players have been signed to their practice squad. Linebackers Joe Bachie and Andrew Dowell, as well as wide receiver Bennie Fowler, were retained as practice players after being cut Saturday as NFL teams trimmed their rosters to 53.

There was denial, of course.     Bachie resurfaced at the NFL scouting combine, where he explained what led to his suspension in late October, five days after the Spartans played their eighth game of the season. “It was a pre-workout, over-the-counter,” he said. “It was just tainted a little bit. You can never really trust what’s in those over-the-counter things. I took it one time for just an extra lift on a Tuesday, tested six days later. I failed. I thought I was going to be perfectly clean. I had taken this product in the past when it was certified and I had passed five-to-six NCAA, Big Ten drug tests. It was heartbreaking. …Telling my dad, it was tough to spit words out of my mouth.”

    Michigan State plans to honor 21 seniors before Saturday’s regular-season and home finale against Maryland. Suspended star linebacker and two-time captain Joe Bachie will still be one of them. “I’m treating this just like an injury,” coach Mark Dantonio said Tuesday. “He went through the appeal process.     For the fourth time in his career, Michigan State senior linebacker Joe Bachie has been named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week. Bachie was all over the field in MSU’s 31-10 win at Northwestern last Saturday. He recorded a career-high 14 tackles (13 solo, one assist) to lead the Spartan defense, marking his 11th career game with double-figure tackles and second straight this season (12 vs. Arizona State on Sept. 14).

    The senior middle linebacker finished with 53 production points after filling up the stat sheet. “That’s the highest one I’ve ever had,” Dantonio said during his weekly teleconference on Sunday night, “and I really started doing this when I was with Nick Saban in 1995, so that’s the highest production points I’ve ever seen.”

    Michigan State broke preseason camp Thursday, and before the Spartans headed for a couple of days off, they also named this season’s captains. Fifth-year senior quarterback Brian Lewerke and senior linebacker Joe Bachie were named Michigan State captains for the second straight season while fifth-year senior defensive tackle Raequan Williams and fifth-year senior defensive end Kenny Willekes were also named a captain. It’s the first time Michigan State has named four captains since 2009.

    Michigan State has been on a bit of a roller-coaster the past few years, with seasons that have been good, bad and ugly. The Spartans actually had a little bit of all three a year ago in posting a 7-6 record.
