He didn’t dress him. But he might as well have. After all, Kenny Willekes borrowed Joe Bachie’s suit, his tie, his shirt. And would’ve borrowed his underwear if Bachie had let him. You’d think that Willekes, whose football smarts and athletic gifts have made him an all-American candidate and likely NFLer, would know how to dress himself for an event like Big Ten media days. But he doesn’t, Bachie jokes.

Michigan State defensive tackle Raequan Williams has been named to the 2019 Outland Award Watch List, while linebacker Joe Bachie and defensive end Kenny Willekes are on the 2019 Nagurski Award Watch List, which were both announced Monday by the Football Writers Association of America.

Bachie Named to Butkus Award Watch List, Scott Tabbed to Thorpe Award Watch List
Michigan State linebacker Joe Bachie has been named to the 2019 Butkus Award Watch List, while defensive back Josiah Scott has been named to the 2019 Paycom Jim Thorpe Award Watch List, as both were announced Monday. Bachie is one of 51 players on the preseason list for the Butkus Award, given annually to the best linebacker in college football. Scott is one of 46 players on the preseason list for the Paycom Jim Thorpe Award, which annually recognizes the best defensive back in college football.

Joe Bachie’s dad shaped his life and career
Shortly after Michigan State linebacker Joe Bachie decided to delay his NFL future and return to school for his senior season, he took a trip back home to Brook Park, Ohio. He was met with a sledgehammer and a pry bar. Technically, this was supposed to be a break from workouts and classes. But his father, Joe Sr., had other plans. For two days, Joe Sr. took his boys out to work on a concrete job, where they tore out a patio the old-school way – by hand.

Three Spartans land in Sports Illustrated’s top-100 rankings
Senior linebacker Joe Bachie checked in at No. 92, senior defensive tackle Raequan Williams is No. 74 and senior defensive end Kenny Willekes landed at No. 52. Bachie, Williams and Willekes all are heading into their third season as starters for the Spartans, who finished No. 1 nationally in rushing defense in 2018.

MSU taking Bachie, Williams, Willekes to Big Ten Media Days
Michigan State is bringing three members of what is expected to be an elite defense to next week’s Big Ten Media Days. Linebacker Joe Bachie, defensive tackle Raequan Williams and end Kenny Willekes, all seniors, will be the three Spartan representatives in Chicago, the league announced Monday.

Sporting News unveiled its preseason All-American team on Wednesday and listed defensive end Kenny Willekes on the first team and linebacker Joe Bachie on the second team. Both chose to return as seniors this year instead of leaving for the NFL draft.

Sports Illustrated includes Joe Bachie among defensive stars who could win the Heisman
Recently, Sports Illustrated released a list of 117 players who could compete for the Heisman Trophy, and a small portion (eight players), were defensive stars. It’s a slim percentage of the candidates, but there’s also a slim chance that a defensive player wins, too. Joe Bachie was one of the eight defensive players on the list.

Athlon Sports: 5 Spartans among Big Ten’s top NFL prospects
After a handful of Michigan State players decided against turning pro after the 2018 season, the Spartans figure to be well represented again in next year’s NFL Draft. Defensive tackle Raequan Williams, end Kenny Willekes, linebacker Joe Bachie and safety David Dowell all pondered a leap into the NFL, and all returned. Athlon Sports named each of them, and senior quarterback Brian Lewerke, among the Big Ten’s top-25 draft prospects for 2020.

Joe Bachie announced Friday he is returning to Michigan State for his senior season rather than entering the NFL Draft. Bachie will be a third-year starter at Mike linebacker in MSU’s defense in 2019. One of three captains, he was a first-team All-Big Ten selection by the coaches and second-team honoree from the media in 2018.

Five Spartans Named to Associated Press All-Big Ten Team
Five Spartans have been named to The Associated Press All-Big Ten team, as voted on by a 27-member panel consisting of writers and broadcasters who cover the Big Ten. Junior defensive end Kenny Willekes, who also a first-team All-Big Ten honoree by the coaches and media, garnered first-team AP accolades, along with junior nose tackle Raequan Williams. Junior linebacker Joe Bachie, sophomore placekicker Matt Coghlin, and junior cornerback Justin Layne picked up second-team honors.

2018 Spartan Football Awards Banquet Recap
The Michigan State football program held its 2018 awards banquet on Sunday afternoon before a crowd of more than 650 at the Kellogg Center on campus. Junior defensive end Kenny Willekes was selected Most Valuable Player (Governor’s Award recipient) by his teammates. Willekes, who leads the Big Ten in tackles for loss with 20.5, becomes the first-ever Spartan defensive end to win the Governor’s Award, which has been given out since 1931.
