What happens moving forward with Lewerke’s shoulder could dictate a move to either Rocky Lombardi or Theo Day, the 12th-year coach said Sunday night on a teleconference to recap the Spartans’ 21-7 loss to Michigan a day earlier.

Even after Brian Lewerke was recruited by both MSU and UM, it took some time to truly understand the rivalry when he first got to East Lansing.

It’s been no secret Michigan State’s offense has failed to live up to expectations this season. A mix of injuries and turnovers have plagued a group that returned every starter but one from a 10-win team in 2017, one that was thought to be a potential frontrunner for a Big Ten title. Six games in, though, the 24th-ranked Spartans (4-2, 2-1 Big Ten) have not been ruled out of anything.

Brian Lewerke’s introduction to the Michigan State-Michigan rivalry in 2016 certainly had its ups, but ultimately, it ended on a whimper. After moving the ball well against a talented Michigan defense as a redshirt freshman, Lewerke was driving in the red zone late in the fourth quarter. As he flushed out of the pocket to avoid pressure, he was met by Jabrill Peppers. A sack and a broken tibia later, Lewerke’s season was over.

Lewerke’s first career start was in 2016 against Northwestern and he set multiple program records against the Wildcats last year. However, both games ended in a loss for the Spartans. “They haven’t gone the way I wanted in terms of winning the game,” Lewerke said. “Obviously that’s something we’ve got to work on, but I think we have the full potential to do that this year.”

In Brian Lewerke’s mind, he should have no more than four interceptions to his name this season. The fifth one, in Saturday’s win over Central Michigan, should have been negated by a penalty flag, Michigan State’s redshirt junior quarterback said.

In Michigan State’s 31-20 win over Central Michigan on Saturday at Spartan Stadium, Brian Lewerke stretched his legs for the first time this season. It’s time for him to grab the season by the lapels, rev up his running engine, and get back to being the dangerous dual-threat he was in 2017.

MSU’s conference season is only one game in and it’s only going to get better from here. Michigan State faces their three toughest match-ups here in the next six weeks or so with at Penn State, Michigan and OSU.

Brian Lewerke’s first Big Ten game of the season yielded mixed results. The Michigan State quarterback made plays with his arm and legs, throwing for a pair of touchdowns in a 35-21 win at Indiana last week. However, there were also a trio of turnovers with two interceptions and a fumble.

Brian Lewerke used last September to cement his role as Michigan State’s starting quarterback. The redshirt junior is now two games into his second season leading the offense and gave himself a B-minus grade so far in 2018. “Done enough to get a win in one game,” he said Tuesday night after practice, “but obviously got to do better.”

Tom Allen was in his first year as Indiana’s defensive coordinator when the Hoosiers beat Michigan State for the first time in a decade. The defeat was one of seven straight for the Spartans as they plummeted to a 3-9 finish in 2016 while juggling three quarterbacks. On Saturday, they will make their first return to Bloomington, Ind., since that 24-21 overtime loss and Allen, now Indiana’s head coach, notices a key difference.

Coming off an impressive sophomore season, Brian Lewerke wanted to work on one thing primarily in the off-season: accuracy. In his first season as Michigan State’s starting quarterback, Lewerke proved he could be a playmaker, amassing nearly 3,400 yards in total offense by mixing in more than 500 yards of rushing with five touchdowns. However, after completing only 59 percent of his passes (246-for-417) in 2017, it was clear he needed to take a step forward in that department.

It was 135 degrees on Michigan State’s outdoor practice field Tuesday. So hot it almost felt like home for Brian Lewerke. “It still feels really hot when I go home,” he said as sweat dripped off his forehead. That is where Lewerke is headed Saturday, when the 13th-ranked Spartans face Arizona State in Tempe, a little more than 20 minutes away from where he grew up in Phoenix.

Brian Lewerke was still preparing to be a starter at the varsity level when he learned playing college football would become a reality. The summer before his junior year at Pinnacle High School in Phoenix, the quarterback received his first scholarship offer from then-Arizona State coach Todd Graham while at the university’s practice field.

There’s no special treatment this week for Brian Lewerke. Nope. The Michigan State quarterback doesn’t get to sleep in his own bed at home. He won’t get to wake up and hang out with the family on Saturday morning. And, quite frankly, the junior signal-caller doesn’t want it any other way. “I don’t want any special treatment,” Lewerke said this week.
