Misiewicz Finishes First Major League Season with Seattle
Anthony Misiewicz finished his first season in Major League Baseball (MLB) when the Seattle Mariners wrapped up the regular season over the weekend. Misiewicz opened the 60-game season with the big league club and stayed with the Mariners through the end of the regular season. Seattle finished in third place in the American League West Division with a 27-33 overall record. The rookie made his MLB debut on July 25, throwing 1.0 inning of relief and striking out one in an 8-2 loss at Houston.

Former Spartan Anthony Misiewicz Makes MLB Debut
Former Michigan State baseball player Anthony Misiewicz made his Major League Baseball debut Friday night with the Seattle Mariners on MLB’s Opening Night. Getting called out of the bullpen to start the bottom of the sixth inning, Misiewicz pitched 1.0 inning of relief in the Mariners’ 8-2 loss at Houston, firing one strikeout. Friday was Opening Day of the 2020 MLB season, in which teams are playing a 60-game season because of the shutdown forced by the COVID-19 pandemic.

A Look Back At The 1954 College World Series Spartan Baseball Season
The 1954 season was one for the ages as the Spartans won their first Big Ten Championship, ran through the NCAA tournament en route to a College World Series 3rd place finish, and completed the season with a then school-record 25-10-1 record behind the leadership of Spartan legend John Kobs. The ’54 team featured three future Major League players in Ed Hobaugh, Bob Powell, and College World Series MVP Tom Yewcic, and future NFL quarterback and 1968 NFL MVP Earl Morrall.

Erla is ranked No. 170 in this draft by Baseball America, which would normally be a great thing. Almost certainly, he would be taken in the first 10 rounds. But this year, the draft has been shrunk to just five rounds and only 160 players will be drafted when you count compensation picks. There were 40 rounds and 1,217 players drafted last year.

Redshirt-junior pitcher Mason Erla was named a Second-Team All-American by Collegiate Baseball, announced by the publication Tuesday. Erla becomes Michigan State’s first All-American since 2015 when relief pitcher Dakota Mekkes was a Third-Team National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) All-American.

Spartan Baseball Adds One For 2021 Season
Michigan State baseball head coach Jake Boss Jr., announced that Mason Kottmeyer will be joining the Spartans in the fall of 2020. Kottmeyer is a right-handed pitcher from North Aurora, Illinois (Kaneland High School). “Mason is a very athletic young man with a frame that is extremely protectable,” Boss said. “His best days are ahead of him, and his potential is off the charts. He is an outstanding student who is excited about the Broad College of Business here at MSU.”

Six months after being selected in the Major League Baseball draft, Adam Berghorst climbed the steps of the visitors’ dugout along the third-base line at Yankee Stadium and stepped onto the field. Wearing cleats and a uniform, he checked out the famous ballpark in the Bronx and filed it as a memory to cherish. And he did so as a tight end on the Michigan State football team.
