Michigan State baseball is coming off one of the most successful seasons in school history last year when they posted 36 wins, tied for the fourth-most in school history. Heading into the 2017 season, the Spartans are gearing up to not just reach that mark but top it. The 2017 season kicks off this weekend when MSU travels to Abilene, Texas for a three-day, four-game series against Abilene Christian.

Michigan State baseball was tabbed fifth in the 2017 Big Ten Preseason Poll released by the conference office on Wednesday, Feb. 15. The league’s coaches voted on the top six teams and also selected three student-athletes from their own squads to a Preseason Honors list.

Michigan State baseball hosted its 12th-annual First Pitch Dinner Sunday evening at the Kellogg Center, drawing a crowd of nearly 600. Spartan great Mark Mulder was honored at the event, while three-time World Series Champion Jack Morris delivered the keynote address.

“We’re tired of being close,” Boss said Friday after the team’s first open practice of the season. “It’s time to take that next step and elevate that program another level.” After the team concluded practice on Friday, a short speech from Boss was followed by a chant from the Spartans. Mimicking its motto from last year, a collective shout echoed through the team’s hitting facility. “Big Ten champs.”
