The Michigan State hockey program has announced its team awards for the 2019-20 season. A trio of seniors all garnered two honors, including goaltender John Lethemon who was named the Ron Mason Most Valuable Player. Forward Patrick Khodorenko was named the Outstanding Offensive Player and also won the Spartan Fitness Award, while defenseman Jerad Rosburg won the Blue Line Club President’s Award and was named the Dr. John Downs Outstanding Defensive Player for the second straight year.

Patrick Khodorenko Agrees to Terms With the New York Rangers
Michigan State senior forward Patrick Khodorenko has agreed to terms with the New York Rangers on an entry-level contract, the club announced on Tuesday (March 10). Khodorenko’s contract begins in 2020-21, and he will join the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League (AHL) immediately on an Amateur Try-Out (ATO).

Vote For Khodorenko and Lethemon for the Hobey Baker Award
Michigan State seniors Patrick Khodorenko and John Lethemon are both nominees for the 2020 Hobey Baker Memorial Award. Given annually to college hockey’s top player, Hobey Baker Award fan voting will run until Sunday, March 8 at midnight. Fans can vote once per day at hobeybaker.com/vote.

Khodorenko’s Hat Trick Lifts No. 19 Spartans Past No. 9 Penn State, 4-2
Patrick Khodorenko’s three-goal game pushed the No. 19 Michigan State hockey team past No. 9 Penn State, 4-2, on Friday night at Munn Ice Arena in front of a crowd of over 6,000 fans. Goaltender John Lethemon made 40 saves as the Spartans (13-11-1, 9-5-1) moved into first place in the Big Ten, two points ahead of Ohio State.

Senior center Patrick Khodorenko and senior defenseman Jerad Rosburg have played more games against Michigan and Ohio State than any other team in during their Michigan State careers. They’ve played against the Wolverines and Buckeyes 15 times and there’s at least four more coming up this season against each team in their final year as Spartans. But when it comes to rivalries, there’s nothing like Green and White against Maize and Blue for Khodorenko and Rosburg. It’s exciting, intense, physical and emotional and sometimes a bit chippy.

Four Spartans Voted to Preseason All-Big Ten Teams
The Big Ten released its Preseason All-Big Ten teams on Monday, which included four Spartans. Junior forward Mitchell Lewandowski and sophomore defenseman Dennis Cesana were both voted by the league’s coaches to the second team, while senior forward Patrick Khodorenko and senior defenseman Jerad Rosburg earned honorable mention.

Spartans Announce Captains for 2019-20
Michigan State hockey head coach Danton Cole has announced the team captains for the 2019-20 season. Sam Saliba and Tommy Apap will serve as captains, while Jerad Rosburg and Patrick Khodorenko will be assistant captains. It marks the second straight season Saliba will wear the ‘C’ and the first for Apap, who served as an assistant captain last year. Rosburg and Khodorenko will both be serving in leadership roles for the first time as Spartans.

Taro Hirose Voted Big Ten Player of the Year; Six Spartans Earn All-B1G Honors
Taro Hirose has been named the Big Ten Player of the Year, it was announced by the league office on Tuesday (March 19) along with the All-Big Teams. Hirose was the only unanimous selection to the All-Big Ten First Team. Junior Patrick Khodorenko was voted to the All-Big Ten Second Team, while sophomore Mitchell Lewandowski and senior Zach Osburn were both named All-Big Ten honorable mention. Goaltender Drew DeRidder and defenseman Dennis Cesana were both voted to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team.

Khodorenko has been overshadowed a bit by Hirose and his consistent wizardry, but he’s also put up great numbers, improved his game in all areas, and has emerged as a standout power forward. And like his linemates, he’s scored some jaw-dropping goals.

Khodorenko Named Big Ten First Star of the Week
Michigan State junior Patrick Khodorenko was named the Big Ten First Star of the Week, it was announced by the conference office on Tuesday (Nov. 6). Khodorenko recorded his first career hat trick and added an assist in the Spartans’ 5-3 win over Ferris State last weekend. It was the first four-point game of his career and the hat trick was the first by a Spartan since Ryan Keller in March 2015.

The Michigan State hockey team won its third consecutive game with a 5-3 victory over Ferris State on Friday night at Munn Ice Arena. The Spartans (4-1) scored three goals in first period and never trailed. Patrick Khodorenko recorded a hat trick for the Spartans, scoring all three of his goals on the power play.

Taro Hirose, Patrick Khodorenko, and Mitchell Lewandowski were all named to the Big Ten’s 2018-19 Preseason Watch List, on Monday, Sept. 24. Hirose was one of six unanimous selections on the 15-player list that was voted on by the conference head coaches.
