Sixteen members of the Michigan State wrestling team competed in the Cleveland State Open on Saturday held at the CSU Wooding Gymnasium. A total of five Spartans medaled at the event, highlighted by a third-place finish by redshirt freshman Jwan Britton at 149 pounds.

Michigan State wrestling came out on top in thrilling fashion, 18-17, for its first dual win of the season against Buffalo on Friday night at Alumni Arena in Buffalo, New York. Both teams scored 17 dual match points, but the Spartans won a tiebreaker against the Bulls with more match points, 63-58, for the tie-breaking team point.

Rayvon Foley’s Title Paces Solid Spartan Showing At EMU Open Saturday
Leading the way for the Spartans in the freshman/sophomore division was freshman Rayvon Foley winning the title at 125 pounds. Foley was undefeated through four matches, earning three decisions on his way to the final match. In the title bout, he defeated Drew West of Northern Illinois in a major decision, 23-12, to win the first open tournament of his career.

Michigan State wrestling head coach Roger Chandler announced Thursday that the team will welcome three newcomers in the early signing period. Layne Malczewski (Macomb, Mich./Dakota HS), Peyton Omania (Concord, Calif./De la Salle HS) and Nate Jimenez (Elburn, Ill./Marmion Academy) will join the 2018-19 wrestling squad.

Redshirt junior Javier Gasca became a three-time MSU Open champion at 141 pounds in the open division, and three Spartans took titles in the freshman/sophomore division.

Spartans Kick Off 2017-18 Season By Hosting MSU Open
Michigan State wrestling will kick off its 114th season by hosting the annual Michigan State Open on Sunday, Nov. 5. Jenison Field House will host both an open division for college and post-college wrestlers and a freshman and sophomore division. The preliminary rounds begin at 9:30 a.m. Sunday will be the Spartans’ first action of the season under head coach Roger Chandler, who is in his 21st year on the Spartan wrestling staff and in his second season as head coach.
