Michigan State wrestling (4-7, 1-4 B1G) will have its third-straight Friday-Sunday weekend, wrestling at No. 12 Illinois (4-2, 2-2 B1G) on Friday, Jan. 27 at 8 p.m. ET at Champaign, Ill., at Huff Hall. MSU then returns home to host No. 11 Rutgers (9-2, 3-1 B1G) on Sunday, Jan. 29 at 2 p.m. at Jenison Field House. Sunday’s battle between the Spartans and Scarlet Knights will be nationally televised on Big Ten Network. Shane Sparks will handle play-by-play duties while Jim Gibbons will provide analysis.

Michigan State wrestling won the first two bouts on the way to tying a season-high by winning seven bouts on the afternoon to defeat Clarion, 23-9, Sunday afternoon at Marwick-Boyd Auditorium in Clarion’s Throwdown at the Theater.

Michigan State wrestling posted four bout wins, but No. 16 Central Michigan emerged with a 23-12 victory over the Spartans Friday night in the second-annual Tumbles and Takedowns event at Jenison Field House. A crowd of 1,303 was treated to a fun night of wrestling and gymnastics, as the Spartan gymnastics team took on Minnesota at the same time.

Michigan State wrestling (3-6, 1-4 B1G) has another busy weekend with a pair of non-conference matches, opening by hosting in-state foe No. 16 Central Michigan (2-1, 1-1 MAC) on Friday, Jan. 20 at 7 p.m. at Jenison Field House as part of MSU’s Tumbles and Takedowns with the Michigan State gymnastics, who will be taking on Minnesota. The Spartans then head to Clarion, Pa., to tangle with Clarion (3-6, 0-2 EWL) on Sunday, Jan. 22 at 1 p.m. as part of Clarion’s Throwdown at the Theater, with the match being held on the stage of Clarion’s Marwick-Boyd Auditorium.

Michigan State wrestling got a pin from Javier Gasca and a major decision from Logan Griffin to boost the Spartans to a thrilling 19-17 victory for MSU over Maryland Sunday afternoon at Jenison Field House for the Spartans’ first Big Ten victory this season.

Michigan State wrestling was nipped by Northwestern, 23-21, Friday night at NU’s Welsh-Ryan Arena, as the Spartans were overtaken late by the Wildcats after building a lead. MSU led 21-10 with three bouts remaining before the Wildcats clawed back and captured the 23-21 win. It was the fourth meeting in the last five match-ups in the series to be decided by seven points or less, as last season, MSU won 19-15. Northwestern won, 18-15, in 2013 and 22-15 in 2011. The Spartans still hold a 27-21 series advantage.
