Michigan State opened its 2021 spring season with a tough 3-0 setback at No. 7 Minnesota on Saturday. The opening frame was tight to 14-14, but a 5-0 Gopher run allowed the home team to pull away a bit. MSU was within three at 19-16 after a Talia Edmonds ace, but six of the next eight points went to the home team to close it out 25-18.

Maturity in college sports often goes a long way. MSU volleyball’s No. 9 ranked recruiting class from 2016 is finally in their last year with the program. After a 15-15 overall record last year, the groups renewed sense of wisdom is something they will rest on while clawing through a tough Big Ten conference.

Opening Weekend Sends Spartans to Minneapolis
MSU starts off the spring 2021 season with a trip to Minnesota for a two-match series. The spring 2021 volleyball schedule in the Big Ten conference will consist of 10, two-match weekend series and one home-and-home series with its travel partner. Each team will play 22 Conference matches and no matches against non-conference teams. Michigan State will not play No. 5 Nebraska or Indiana in spring 2021. Both matches will have a live video webstream via BTN+.

Michigan State volleyball faces uphill battle as season becomes reality
It was a rush of excitement and an outburst of relief when the black and white lettering arrived in front of Cathy George and the Michigan State volleyball program. Finally, something that was set in stone in an offseason riddled by uncertainty. Other teams played, the Southeastern Conference, Big 12, Sun Belt and Atlantic Coast Conference had all been doing so during the fall.

Spring 2021 Volleyball Schedule Announced
A 22-game conference-only slate awaits the Michigan State volleyball program in the spring of 2021, as was announced by the Big Ten office late Tuesday evening. The Covid-19 pandemic has altered the look of schedules not only in volleyball but throughout college athletics at every level. The spring 2021 volleyball slate begins the weekend of January 22-24, and will feature two-game series each weekend (five home, five away) against the same opponent, and one split week with a close opponent.

George Announces Four Newest Spartans on Signing Day

MSU Earns USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award
The United State Marine Corps (USMC) and the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) have announced that Michigan State Volleyball is among the that 1,313 teams have earned the USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2019-2020 season.

Volleyball Adds Max-Brown For 2020
Cathy George has announced that Cecilee Max-Brown will enroll at the university and be a part of the program for the upcoming 2020 season. Max-Brown is transferring to Michigan State from Oregon State University, where she appeared in 11 matches in 2019 as a true freshman as she battled injuries.

Incoming Volleyball Class Ranked No. 13
Michigan State’s incoming class has been ranked No. 13 by PrepVolleyball in its annual list of recruiting rankings. The rising senior class was the No. 9 recruiting class in the country in 2016, the juniors earned a No. 15 ranking, and MSU’s sophomores were also tabbed No. 9 by the publication.

For nearly four years, Samantha McLean has been living a double life. In one life, the 5-foot-8 senior shines as the starting defensive specialist/libero on the Michigan State volleyball team. She averages 1.80 digs per set. She’s been a staunch defender in MSU’s back row, twice earning the team’s Most Inspirational Award. In her other life, McLean shines with a 4.0 in the classroom as a kinesiology major on the pre-medical track.
