    A busy week in the transfer portal continued for Michigan State on Wednesday as redshirt junior quarterback Theo Day became the latest to enter the portal. Day is the ninth Michigan State player since spring practice ended on Saturday to enter the NCAA transfer portal and the 26th since last season.

    The verdict of who will be Michigan State football’s next starting quarterback should be rendered soon. Rocky Lombardi, Theo Day, and Payton Thorne have a few more days to plead and present their case to new coach Mel Tucker and offensive coordinator Jay Johnson to why they should be the one to run the Spartans’ offense. It’s likely, with the season opener against Rutgers less than a week away, closing arguments already have been made. Quite possibly, a decision already has been made.

  • Spartans’ quarterback situation still unclear

    The Michigan State coaching staff is still yet to commit to a starting quarterback. The three (main) candidates are redshirt junior Rocky Lombardi, redshirt sophomore Theo Day and redshirt freshman Payton Thorne. Way back in April, I took a lot at each quarterback and made the case both for and against starting that particular player. We are now well into October, and the coaches are still pretty tight-lipped about who is leading the race.

    It’s been a few years, but Michigan State finds itself in the midst of a full-fledged quarterback battle. And while offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Jay Johnson hopes to have it settled by the time the Spartans open the season against Rutgers on either Oct. 23 or 24, he’s not going to force anything when it comes determining whether junior Rocky Lombardi, sophomore Theo Day or redshirt freshman Payton Thorne gets the nod.

  • Position group breakdown: Quarterbacks

    Rocky Lombardi has the most game experience in the group, although those performances were up-and-down. Lombardi stepped in for an injured Brian Lewerke in 2018 and had a nice debut performance in a win over Purdue. After that it was a lot of shuffling between the clearly-injured Lewerke and the not-ready Lombardi.

  • The case for and against Theo Day as Michigan State’s starting QB

    Day is a bit of a wildcard, as quite frankly, we haven’t seen much of him. That gives fans hope that he could be the next Kirk Cousins or Connor Cook, but there’s also the possibility that he’s either not ready to win the starting job over Lombardi or Payton Thorne (or a possible grad transfer), or even if he does, that he may not pan out. So let’s look at both the potential pros and cons on starting Theo Day at quarterback

    There’s a new quarterback competition shaping up and Dantonio has yet to name a frontrunner in it. He hasn’t talked to the media since a postgame press conference after the Dec. 27 Pinstripe Bowl and hasn’t announced if there will be any changes to his coaching staff.

  • Theo Day looking forward to competing for starting job

    Theo Day checked into just his second college game, but it was a short outing. The Michigan State redshirt freshman quarterback was on the field for only five snaps midway through the fourth quarter of a 28-7 loss against Penn State on Oct. 26. That’s because one of those featured him calling the wrong play before being pulled as starter Brian Lewerke returned to the game.

    Dantonio said redshirt freshman Rocky Lombardi, who played the final series against Michigan, took the bulk of the No. 1 reps last week along with freshman Theo Day. So, if Lewerke can’t go, odds are Lombardi gets his first start. That will be determined throughout the week.

    Michigan State is four days away from hosting Purdue and it’s unclear who the Spartans will start at quarterback. That is due to redshirt junior Brian Lewerke’s injured right throwing shoulder. He played through it in last week’s 21-7 loss to Michigan but struggled mightily before being pulled late in the fourth quarter for redshirt freshman backup Rocky Lombardi.

While Brian Lewerke’s starting job is cemented, the Spartans’ two freshmen quarterbacks will be on display for the first time Saturday when they make their unofficial college debuts in the annual Green and White spring game.

  • Michigan State’s 2018 early enrollees ready to get to work

    Michigan State has 20 players committed to its 2018 class, which is No. 21 in the nation according to 247Sports Composite rankings, and coach Mark Dantonio expects them all to sign during the new early signing period, Dec. 20-22. At least seven of them are scheduled to be early enrollees in Dimitri Douglas, four-star quarterback Theo Day, four-star defensive back Xavier Henderson, four-star cornerback Kalon Gervin, three-star wide receiver Julian Major, three-star receiver Javez Alexander and three-star linebacker Edward Warinner. They will be on campus for the start of spring classes on Jan. 8.
