Michigan State senior forward Mitchell Lewandowski and Minnesota senior forward Brannon McManus became good friends when they were junior hockey teammates and linemates in Chicago. Arguably, their best memory of playing for the Chicago Steel is winning the 2016-17 United States Hockey League championship. Then, they took different paths in their college hockey careers – Lewandowski, who’s from Michigan to the Spartans, and McManus, from California to the Gophers. From teammates and close friends to rivals – friendly rivals.

Taro Hirose has been named the Big Ten Player of the Year, it was announced by the league office on Tuesday (March 19) along with the All-Big Teams. Hirose was the only unanimous selection to the All-Big Ten First Team. Junior Patrick Khodorenko was voted to the All-Big Ten Second Team, while sophomore Mitchell Lewandowski and senior Zach Osburn were both named All-Big Ten honorable mention. Goaltender Drew DeRidder and defenseman Dennis Cesana were both voted to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team.

Mitchell Lewandowski was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year and was one of three Spartans to receive All-Big Ten honors, the conference office announced on Tuesday, March 13. Sophomore Taro Hirose was voted to the All-Big Ten Second Team, while Lewandowski and senior Carson Gatt earned honorable mention all-conference. Additionally, Lewandowski was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman team and was the only unanimous selection on any of the all-conference teams.

Piece of the Future: Lewandowski Brings Hope With His 17 Goals
When Mitchell Lewandowski took the ice for Michigan State’s game against Wisconsin, he had played in just eight college games. But in his third Big Ten match, he notched two goals and an assist, factoring in all of Michigan State’s three points. On his first goal, he stole the puck from the defenseman and scored on a quick wrister. Later on in the game, he scored off a one-timer.

Michigan State freshman Mitchell Lewandowski was named the Big Ten Third Star of the Week, the conference office announced on Tuesday, Jan. 16. It is the fourth time this season Lewandowski has received a Big Ten weekly award. Lewandowski scored three goals last weekend as the Spartans split a road series at No. 18 Wisconsin. The winger from Clarkston score the game-winning goal in Friday’s 2-0 win and then added two more the following night.
