With Jake Hartbarger back, Michigan State hopes its carousel of punters stops
Perhaps no injury situation was more emblematic of Michigan State’s season in 2018 than the one the Spartans had at punter. The Spartans lost starter Jake Hartbarger for the year in the second game, when an Arizona State player ran into his plant leg during a punt early in the game and left him with what would become a season-ending injury.

Strong kicking game highlights Michigan State’s special teams but returns still questionable
Matt Coghlin never saw the field as a true freshman while taking a redshirt. While watching him kick in practice that season, Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio had his doubts about the new guy. Not anymore. Coghlin is now heading into his third season as a starter and is one of the best kickers in the nation. His confidence has grown and he gives the Spartans a reliable leg to put points on the board.

Hartbarger Injury Could Change In-Game Approach
The one outcome from last Saturday’s loss to Arizona State that may have the most long-lasting impact on the Michigan State football season is the loss if punter Jake Hartbarger. The senior punter was hit on a dead play after the whistles had blown, and was lost for the next 6-8 weeks to a bone bruise or fracture in his leg. In his absence, backup quarterback Rocky Lombardi will take over the punting duties for the Spartans. Lombardi had one punt for 32 yards coming immediately following the injury to Hart

Jake Hartbarger’s goal is to limit touchbacks
It doesn’t really matter to Jake Hartbarger when he’s put into the game. In Michigan State’s 17-9 win over Indiana last Saturday, MSU’s junior punter booted the ball eight times, including a career-best 62-yard punt pinning the Hoosiers at their own 1-yard line, for 374 yards and pinned three inside the Hoosiers’ 20.

2017 Michigan vs. MSU: Can Jake Hartbarger limit Peoples-Jones?
Hartbarger often has allowed MSU to flip field position this season, particularly Saturday in the Spartans’ 17-10 win over Iowa. All five of his punts pinned the Hawkeyes inside their own 20-yard line, something he has done 10 times this season to opponents. With his booming right leg, Hartbarger has shown a tendency to outkick his coverage teams at times the past three years, and he has five of 50 punts yards or more this season. However, he is getting more adept at using that strength for more hangtime, with eight fair catches.

Couch: Hartbarger is booming. pinpointing punts for Michigan State
No one likes seeing their team’s punter take the field. His mere presence is proof of failure. But it hasn’t felt that way for Michigan State when junior Jake Hartbarger trots out to kick the ball away and with good reason. Hartbarger can’t remember the last time he shanked a punt. Not in a game, a practice. Not anywhere.

Couch: Pressure on MSU’s Scanlon, Hartbarger to limit Darius Phillips
Scanlon was in the same freshman dorm as Phillips at WMU and was the Broncos’ kickoff specialists for two seasons, 2013 and ’14, before transferring to Michigan State as a preferred walk-on. He was replaced at WMU by former minor league baseball player and local product Derrick Mitchell, who, as a 30-year-old redshirt junior, will kickoff for the Broncos this Saturday.

2017 Michigan State football preview: The special teams
MSU will have a new kicker for the first time since its Rose Bowl run four years ago. Redshirt freshman Matt Coghlin is expected to replace departing senior Michael Geiger. It appears Coglin will get the first crack at the job, but Western Michigan transfer Brett Scanlon, a senior walk-on, and true freshman Cole Hahn will be standing by should Coghlin struggle. Scanlon or Hahn is likely to handle kickoffs from the get-go

Punter Jake Hartbarger improves confidence as Michigan State looks to lead the nation
Hartbarger is just the third starting punter during coach Mark Dantonio’s 11-year tenure and the other two were Aaron Bates and Mike Sadler – both four-year starters and among the best to ever play the position for the Spartans. Bates was the first punter in program history selected as a captain and Sadler, who died in a car crash last summer, was a beloved teammate. Then, Hartbarger took over the job in 2015 as Michigan State won a Big Ten title and reached the College Football Playoff.
