  • Daily Debate: Which true freshman will make the biggest impact?

    There was a time not long ago that maybe a handful of true freshmen would come in and play right away at Michigan State. In 2007, head coach Mark Dantonio’s first season, the Spartans played six true freshmen. That was the most MSU would play until 2015, when it was again six freshmen who saw the field. The 2016 season was an entirely different story, with Michigan State playing nine true freshmen because of a combination of performance and injuries. Under normal circumstances, that could be considered an aberration and MSU could go back to redshirting the vast majority of its 2017 class.

    Josiah Scott became one of the spring game stars. Hunter Rison and Jack Camper both gave fans a sneak peek at their skills as well. Those were Michigan State’s three early enrollees. But the Spartans could be counting on a few more true freshmen to help rebound from last year’s 3-9 debacle.

    The word that seemed to echo throughout Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio’s National Signing Day news conference was “early.” He said it 12 times, sometimes in reference to how early his players committed during the 2017 cycle, but usually referring to his hopes for when incoming freshmen will begin to contribute. “Look for him to play early in his career here,” he said of wide receiver C.J. Hayes.

    With all the hubbub surrounding the quarterback position, Michigan State’s inexperience at wide receiver seems to have been overshadowed. But it is every bit as important as who is delivering the ball. The Spartans completed 211 passes in 2016. Seniors caught 133 of them. Underclassman running backs and tight ends caught 25 more still.

    Antjuan Simmons can see the massive, yellow Block M that adorns the outside of Michigan Stadium’s scoreboard every time he walks out the front door of Pioneer High School. The Michigan presence wasn’t as in-your-face for Hunter Rison of Skyline High School, but he was still close enough.

    Nine freshmen played in a football game for Michigan State in 2016. That would be nine real freshmen. You know, the ones that are in their first year at college. We’re not talking about the ones that got two semesters of learning the ropes of college life under their belts as a redshirt before seeing the field. They’re still young and inexperienced, but not like real freshmen.

  • Hunter Rison hopes to play as a freshman for Michigan State, wear his father’s No. 1 jersey

    The No. 1 jersey may be making a return to Spartan Stadium this fall after a nearly 15-year absence, and the name above that number could be a familiar one. The green and white No. 1 jersey has been mothballed since 2002, when wide receiver Charles Rogers was the last to wear it for Michigan State.

  • Grinz on Green Signing Day Recap: Hunter Rison, Cody White Both Lifelong Students of the Game

    It’s as if Hunter Rison and Cody White are coming to Michigan State with an abundance of advanced-placement credits. In wide receiving. Both first-year Spartans to be – Rison is already enrolled and White arrives with the rest of the 2017 recruiting class this summer – have been students of the game since birth, and probably before based on conclusions experts have made about pre-natal information exchange.

  • Handing out superlatives for the Spartans’ 2017 class

    Michigan State wrapped up National Signing Day on Wednesday by bringing in 20 guys to join the Spartans’ three early enrollees. MSU’s 2017 class isn’t as highly-rated as its 2016 counterpart, but head coach Mark Dantonio said Wednesday that the Spartans filled needs and feel good about the athleticism and versatility they added to their roster.

    Mark Dantonio couldn’t say enough good things Wednesday about four-star recruit Hunter Rison, a 6-foot, 195-pound receiver from Ann Arbor Skyline and the son of Spartans legend Andre Rison. “He’s obviously a legacy here with his father having played here,” Dantonio said. “But you make your own way. You make your own way as a young person. He came here. Has great hands, very, very, I guess I use the word crisp. Crisp route runner. He’s a guy that has a great motor, very enthusiastic. Played defense, as well.”

For freshman Hunter Rison, that’s reality as he makes his way through his first few weeks as a college student.   • Four-star recruits Hunter Rison, Matt Dotson, and Kevin Jarvis all likely to make impact freshman year for Michigan State Football

    During Michigan State’s 3-9 season last year, head coach Mark Dantonio sent nine true freshman to the field to see snaps. That was by far the most number of true freshman he has played in his tenure at Michigan State, and this season, the progression of those recruits is likely to leave more freshman off the field than not. However, Michigan State has three four-star recruits who are more than capable of quickly finding a role in the Spartans’ weekly rotation.

  • Pioneer LB Antjuan Simmons ‘ready to get after it’ at Michigan State

    Since the Big House casts a big shadow in Ann Arbor, how ironic is it that the two top players from the city are bound for East Lansing? Linebacker Antjuan Simmons of Pioneer on Wednesday signed his national letter of intent with Michigan State and will join early enrollee wide receiver Hunter Rison of Skyline High in green.
