In some ways Michigan State and San Diego County Credit Union Holiday Bowl opponent Washington State are very much alike. The Spartans are ranked No. 16 in the College Football Playoff Rankings, just two spots ahead of the No. 18 Cougars. Michigan State will enter the Dec. 28 showdown in San Diego at 9-3, which is the same record as Washington State. Those similarities make for an evenly-matched bowl game — the three-point spread in Las Vegas agrees — and an intriguing showdown that’s hard to predict.

Michigan State fans probably would have preferred a New Year’s Day bowl against an SEC opponent, but a top-20 matchup with a Pac 12 school is a pretty good consolation prize. The Spartans first ever trip to the Holiday Bowl will be their eighth all-time meeting with Washington State, and the first time the two schools have played since 1977.

Michigan State is slowly getting back into football mode as it prepares to take on Washington State in the Holiday Bowl on Dec. 28 in San Diego. The Spartans practiced a couple of times last weekend to shake off some of the rust and will get back to work this weekend once most of the players have wrapped up final exams. By the end of next week, the Spartans will be headed to the West Coast, eager to play in a bowl game after missing out last season.

While most of Michigan was being blanketed with snow Wednesday evening, Mark Dantonio was more than 2,000 miles to the west for a Holiday Bowl press conference in San Diego.”I think they’re getting seven to 10 inches (of snow) back home, 17 degrees,” Dantonio said, according to a transcript via ASAP Sports. “Out here on the sunny West Coast is great for us.”

Chris Frey was passing Kyonta Stallworth inside the Duffy Daugherty Building Friday and heard the redshirt sophomore defensive tackle mention how he hadn’t practiced in a year. “I was like, ‘no, it’s been two weeks. I’m glad you feel that way, though,’” Frey, a Michigan State senior linebacker said with a laugh.

Washington State has one of the top passing attacks in the nation but is now short two key targets. The No. 18 Cougars (9-3, 6-3 Pac-12) will not have their top two wide receivers, Tavares Martin Jr. and Isaiah Johnson-Mack, for the Dec. 28 Holiday Bowl against No. 16 Michigan State (9-3, 7-2 Big Ten) in San Diego.

One by one, they admitted not going to Florida stunned them, and being leaped by Michigan for a New Year’s Day bid stung them. But Michigan State’s football players also said they quickly came to a few realizations after receiving a bid to the Holiday Bowl last week. Linebacker Chris Frey listed off the reasons, from getting to go to San Diego to facing another ranked opponent in Washington State to playing in a bowl a year after finishing 3-9.

When Michigan State football takes the field Dec. 28 in the Holiday Bowl in San Diego, it will face the Washington State Cougars and coach Mike Leach. Leach may not officially be “The Most Interesting Coach in College Football,” but he’s certainly one of the most quotable.

There’s a destination. There’s an opponent. There’s a line. And, yes, Michigan State is the underdog. Against a team it is ranked above. In a location the Spartans did not expect to be playing. All that remains now is for the Spartans to begin practicing for the Holiday Bowl and a chance to win their 10th game of their turnaround season.

Washington State was a 3-point favorite against Michigan State, as of 2 p.m. Monday, for their Dec. 28 Holiday Bowl matchup in San Diego. The line opened at Washington State -4.5 at 1:45 p.m. and moved to -3 just five minutes later.
