This isn’t exactly Harlon Barnett’s first rodeo. After all, before becoming Florida State’s defensive coordinator in 2018, Barnett spent 11 seasons as part of Mark Dantonio’s staff at Michigan State, coaching the defensive backs the entire time while adding co-defensive coordinator duties from 2015-17 and serving as associate head coach in 2017.

There was no sales pitch needed for Harlon Barnett. When Mel Tucker called Barnett and asked if he’d be interested in returning to Michigan State to coach the defensive backs, Barnett’s response was, “When do you need me there?” Just like that, the long-time Spartan was on his way back to East Lansing.

Mark Dantonio is in the running for national coach of the year awards for his performance turning around Michigan State this season. A highly-ranked defense has been key in the rebound and co-defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach Harlon Barnett is being recognized for his contributions. Barnett on Wednesday was named one of 56 nominees for the Broyles Award, which is presented annually to the nation’s top assistant coach.
