A pre-season All-Big Ten Honorable Mention selection as well, DeRidder established career bests in games played (25), wins (9) minutes played (1448), and saves (799), posting a 2.95 GAA and .918 save percentage this season.

DeRidder Earns B1G First Star Honor
Michigan State senior goaltender Drew DeRidder (Fenton, Mich.) has been named the No. 1 Star of the Week by the Big Ten office, as announced on Tuesday. DeRidder backstopped the Spartans to a 30-save shutout victory at No. 8/8 Notre Dame last Saturday. Not only did he pick up the overtime shutout (his second of the season), but he also had the primary assist on Mitchell Lewandowski’s game-winning goal for the 1-0 victory that allowed for a split in the series and sent MSU into the holiday break on a strong note.

Cesana and DeRidder Earn All-Big Ten Honorable Mention
Michigan State juniors Drew DeRidder and Dennis Cesana have earned All-Big Ten honorable mention, it was announced by the conference office today (March 16). The 2020-21 All-Big Ten honors were selected by the league’s coaches and media. It’s the second straight All-Big Ten honor for Cesana, who was voted to the league’s second team last season. Both DeRidder and Cesana were named to the Big Ten All-Freshman team in 2018-19.

DeRidder Giving Michigan State a Fighting Chance
“He did a great job of realizing that this position is only about the next shot,” Spartans goaltender coach Joe Exter said. “And we instilled that from a moment where you practice games, doesn’t matter what you did in the previous shot. It’s the next one. That’s what you determined on. And it’s drilled in daily, and eventually, after, you introduce it, establish the mindset. The goalie takes it himself and realizes the benefit of that mentality.”

Michigan State junior goaltender Drew DeRidder was named the Big Ten Second Star of the Week, the conference office announced on Wednesday. DeRidder recorded his first career shutout last weekend as the Spartans went 1-0-1 against Arizona State to start the 2020-21 season.

Three Spartans who could have breakout years in 2020-21
Michigan State hockey lost a lot of top-tier players and a lot of production this past spring with the graduation of starting goaltender John Lethemon, leading point-getter Patrick Khodorenko, and forward Sam Saliba, among others. The Spartans will need to have several players step up if they want to take the next step and compete for a Big Ten title. However, the Spartans have numerous guys on the roster who are poised to take that next step.

Taro Hirose Voted Big Ten Player of the Year; Six Spartans Earn All-B1G Honors
Taro Hirose has been named the Big Ten Player of the Year, it was announced by the league office on Tuesday (March 19) along with the All-Big Teams. Hirose was the only unanimous selection to the All-Big Ten First Team. Junior Patrick Khodorenko was voted to the All-Big Ten Second Team, while sophomore Mitchell Lewandowski and senior Zach Osburn were both named All-Big Ten honorable mention. Goaltender Drew DeRidder and defenseman Dennis Cesana were both voted to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team.

Neil’s Notebook: DeRidder Excited to Face Future Teammates
A year ago, goalie Drew DeRidder was playing for the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders in the United States Hockey League. The RoughRiders were in a rebuilding mode, not winning many games and DeRidder was facing about 30-40 shots a game. There were some tough nights. But DeRidder loved it. The experience made him a better goalie.
