Five members of the Michigan State women’s golf team have been named Women’s Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholars, the organization announced this week. Valery Plata, Yurika Tanida, Paz Marfa Sans, Leila Raines and Valentina Rossi all garnered the honor. The criteria for selection to the All-American Scholar Team are some of the most stringent in all of college athletics as the minimum cumulative GPA  for garnering the honor is 3.50.

Michigan State will have prominent representation at THE JOHN SHIPPEN National Invitational presented by Rocket Mortgage in Detroit. Rising senior Troy Taylor II and Andrew Walker, who graduated in the spring, will both compete in the inaugural event at Detroit Golf Club, this Sunday and Monday (June 27-28). In conjunction with the tournament, THE JOHN SHIPPEN Sports Business Summit will be held June 29-30 and feature Dr. Ashley Baker, MSU Athletics’ chief diversity, equity and inclusion officer.

Michigan State rising senior Valery Plata was been granted a sponsor exemption to take part in the Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give. The 2021 Meijer LPGA Classic will take place June 17-20 at Blythefield Country Club in Grand Rapids. The official tour event will feature 144 of the world’s best players competing over four days. Plata will be one of three Spartans playing in the event as she’ll join current LPGA Tour members, Sarah Burnham and Liz Nagel.

Michigan State started off the season in early February with the Big Ten Match Play Championship at Hammock Beach Resort in Palm Coast, Florida. MSU took third at the event, the Spartans’ fifth top-three showing at the annual event that dates back to 2009. The team followed that performance up with a 12th place finish among a 14-team field at the Kiawah Invitational in Maryland at the Oak Point Golf Club. James Piot led the Spartans in tying for 23rd place.

Michigan State senior James Piot’s run at the 2021 NCAA Championships came to an end on Sunday evening. The native of Canton shot an 8-over-par 78 on Sunday, finishing the three rounds 11-over-par 222 (69-74-78) and tied for 90th place. Piot came up short in needing to be one of top nine individuals not on one of the 15 advancing teams to move on to Monday’s final round to get a shot at the individual national championship.

In cutting seven shots off their opening-round score, the Spartans moved up two spots and into a tie for 12th place at 19-over-par 595 (301-294). MSU is tied with UCLA and is four shots back of 11th-place Arizona State and just five shots back of ninth place.

Michigan State senior James Piot is heading to the NCAA Championships. Piot shot his second straight 3-under-par 68 on Wednesday in the final round of the NCAA Kingston Springs Regional to finish the tournament 5-under-par 208 (72-68-68) and tied for fourth place. Piot claimed the only individual bid in the Regional as he was the top finisher out of those players not on one of the five teams to advance to the NCAA Championships.
