The Michigan State men’s golf team opened the 2021 season in strong fashion on Friday as the Spartans advanced to the semifinals of the Big Ten Match Play Championship at Hammock Beach Resort in Palm Coast, Florida. The No. 8-seeded Spartans defeated Maryland, 3.5-1.5, in the opening round, then tied No. 1 seed Northwestern, but won the tiebreaker, which was total holes ahead in the final match (7-6).
The Michigan State women’s golf team completed round two of the UCF Challenge on Monday, moving up two spots into 11th place. The Spartans shot an 8-over-par 296 on Monday and are 12-over-par 588 for the tournament that features some of the nation’s top teams.
The Michigan State women’s golf team will officially open the 2021 spring season on Sunday with the UCF Challenge at Eagle Creek Golf Club in Orlando, Florida. The 54-hole event will take place Sunday-Tuesday, with 18 holes per day.
Fossum, who as a 19-year-old beat legendary golfer Babe Didrikson-Zaharias in a heads-up match and later went on to become the first women’s golf coach at Michigan State, died Sunday. She was 93. Fossum coached at Michigan State from 1973, alongside husband and men’s coach Bruce Fossum, until her retirement in 1997, when Slobodnik-Stoll took over the program — where she remains today. Fossum was inducted into the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame in 2002.

Former Spartan standout Ally Geer is ready to compete in the 2020 Arnold Palmer Cup. Following a summer postponement, the event is now set to get going this week, Dec. 21-23, at Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Club and Lodge.
Michigan State men’s golf head coach Casey Lubahn announced today (Nov. 18) the signing of two student-athletes for 2020-21. Ashton McCulloch (Kingston, Ontario) and Satchel Pierce (Edwardsburg, Mich.) have both signed National Letters of Intent to join the Spartans for next fall.

Four Michigan State women’s golfers competed in the GCAA (Golf Coaches Association of America) Fall Amateur Series on Monday-Tuesday (Sept. 28-29) at The Fortress Golf Course in Frankenmuth, Michigan. The tournament featured both men and women collegiate golfers.
Michigan State rising junior Valery Plata put together an outstanding run at this week’s U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship as she made it all the way to the semifinals. Plata’s impressive run eventually came to a halt one match shy of the championship as she fell to 2019 champ Gabriella Ruffels, 2&1, on Saturday afternoon at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Maryland.
Friday will be “College Day” at the Michigan Amateur. Michigan State’s James Piot, of Canton, will meet incoming Michigan State freshmen August Meekhof of suburban Grand Rapids in one of Friday’s semifinals. The championship match is set for Friday afternoon on the Heather course at Boyne.

Four members of the Michigan State women’s golf team were named to the All-Big Ten Team, announced by the conference office on Monday (May 18). Leading the way was sophomore Valery Plata, who was named the Big Ten Golfer of the Year. Plata was joined on the All-Big Ten First Team by senior Allyson Geer-Park and junior Yurika Tanida. Senior Paz Marfa Sans was selected to the second team.
Michigan State junior men’s golfer James Piot has been voted to the All-Big Ten Second Team, the conference announced on Monday (May 18). “We’re happy for James to once again be a part of the All-Big Ten Team,” MSU head coach Casey Lubahn said. “I know how hard he works and while he wasn’t completely satisfied with this year, it’s always special to be honored by the conference and know he will be working to push higher next year.”
From the U.S. Amateur to state championships to injury-filled seasons, Michigan State men’s golf senior Andrew Walker has a career full of highs and lows, and remains eager for what the future holds. Walker had a putter put in his hand at the age of three. He would tag along with his father and brother in the spring and summer to sharpen his golf skills. They played multiple rounds of golf a day, and Walker was striving to beat his dad from an early age.
In a perfect world, Ally Geer-Park would be on a golf course, somewhere. As one of the top golfers in Michigan State history, the senior would have just capped her second straight appearance at the Augusta National Women’s Amateur while turning her focus to the final event of the season for the Spartans heading into the Big Ten tournament.

Michigan State senior Allyson Geer-Park has been named to the United States Team for the 2020 Arnold Palmer Cup, it was announced on Friday, March 27. Geer-Park was one of six players to garner an automatic qualifier to the 12-woman US Team.

The Michigan State men’s golf team is in fourth place after two rounds of play on Monday in The Challenge at The Concession in Bradenton, Florida. The Spartans are 47-over-par 623 (305-318), 11-shots out of second place. Host South Florida was the only team in the field of 11 to put together a round under 300 on Monday and leads the tournament at 23-over-par 599 (299-300).
Mark Dantonio’s sudden retirement left Jordon Simmons in limbo. The announcement Feb. 4 that he was done after 13 seasons at Michigan State came hours before signing day when Simmons was expected to sign his letter of intent. Instead, the 2020 running back recruit from Marietta, Georgia, decided to wait until the Spartans hired a new football coach. It turned out to be a familiar name with ties to his family: Mel Tucker.
