The first time I saw Kirk Gibson in the flesh, he was rampaging toward me, near-naked and jeering; the second time, he limped to the plate and hit one of the most dramatic home runs in history. One moment was heinous, the other heroic. In each he seemed unbound by humanity’s usual norms and limits, bigger than life, incomprehensible. Both events occurred three decades ago. Now it was a late-March morning in 2018, and as I approached a dugout, I recognized the broad back of Gibson, sitting alone.
Former Saginaw Heritage and Michigan State University standout Jeff Kinley is making all-star games a regular part of his minor league baseball schedule. For the second straight season, Kinley earned an all-star spot and for the second straight season came through with a scoreless appearance.

Michigan State junior pitcher Riley McCauley was selected in the 14th round of the 2018 Major League Baseball Draft on Wednesday.McCauley was selected in the 14th round (pick number 428 overall) by the Chicago Cubs. This marks the third-straight year that a Spartan has been drafted by the Cubs, joining Dakota Mekkes (2016) & Brandon Hughes (2017).

Eighth-seeded Michigan State fell to fifth-seeded Indiana, in a heart-breaking 6-5 loss in 10 innings, Thursday afternoon in an elimination game of the Big Ten Baseball Tournament at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Nebraska.
Eighth-seeded Michigan State gave top-seeded and regular-season champion Minnesota, the 12th-ranked team in the country, all it could handle and more, but the Spartans came up short in a 3-2 loss Wednesday in the first round of the Big Ten Baseball Tournament at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Nebraska.
MSU is making its fourth Big Ten Tournament appearance in the last five seasons, only missing last year (although this season wasn’t the best either) and it’s the Spartans 14th time making the tournament in school history. Unfortunately, Michigan State did finish last in the tourney standings, so they get to take on the 12th-ranked Minnesota Gophers in the first round starting later tonight at 6 p.m.

Michigan State baseball had three players recognized by the Big Ten Conference with postseason awards announced Tuesday afternoon by the league office, prior to Wednesday’s start of the B1G Baseball Tournament at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Nebraska.

The Spartans biggest goal right now should be to extend their season as much as they can. Michigan State is currently ninth in the conference standings (tied with Maryland for the eighth seed) which means they are out of the Big Ten tournament as of now. The top eight teams in the conference will, of course, make it and have a shot at winning it.
