Michigan State baseball used a six-run fifth inning to boost the Spartans to a 13-5 win over the Wildcats of Northwestern Saturday afternoon at a cold and rainy Miller Park, playing the last few innings under cold, windy and rainy conditions. Saturday’s game was the series finale after playing a doubleheader Friday, adjusting the weekend schedule due to inclement weather in the Chicago area for Saturday afternoon and Sunday.

Michigan State baseball split a doubleheader Friday at Northwestern, winning the opener, 8-1, before getting nipped in the nightcap, 3-2. MSU and NU played a doubleheader Friday after the weekend schedule was adjusted due to inclement weather in the Evanston area forecast for Sunday. The Spartans and Wildcats will wrap up the three-game series on Saturday, with the scheduled start now moved up from 1 p.m. to Noon ET due to the weather forecast for Saturday afternoon.

Big Ten action is back after a one game stint vs. the Toledo Rockets. Michigan State handled them with ease on their way to a 11-1 rout. It put the Spartans at 21-16 for the year but unfortunately doesn’t help their case as far as the B1G is concerned.Next up on the Spartans schedule is Northwestern. The Wildcats will host Michigan State for a three game series starting later on today.

Twelve Big Ten games are left on Michigan State’s schedule, including a few out of conference games. This team would have to win at least nine of those to put themselves back in contention. Along with making it further in the B1G Tournament.For now the Spartans plan to focus on their next opponent — Toledo.

Michigan State was swept by Maryland over the weekend in a three game conference series. The trio of losses puts this team at 20-16 for the year (5-7 B1G) which is good for ninth in the Big Ten. The Terrapins, on the other hand, improved to 28-11 (12-3 B1G).

Michigan State baseball lost at No. 15 Michigan, 12-4, Tuesday night in a non-conference match-up at Wilpon Complex. The Spartans jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning and later took a 4-3 advantage in the top of the fifth, but were unable to hold on to that lead and suffered defeat for the first time in the last three games against the Wolverines.

It’s a midweek game, and it won’t count in the conference standings. But Michigan State baseball will be trying to make a statement when it visits nationally ranked Michigan for a Tuesday night game at the Wilpon Complex .“It’s still a rivalry for us,” Michigan State coach Jake Boss said. “It doesn’t count in the Big Ten standings, but it’s certainly important to our kids. I can’t speak for them, but it’s something that’s extremely important for us as a program.”

The Spartan baseball season, to say the least, has experienced a myriad of troughs and valleys. Much like a program-best start in 2016, MSU started off 2017 red hot, its eyes set on a Big Ten championship. Predictably through the grind of a baseball season, the Spartans started to slow down.

After a mid-week non conference loss at Notre Dame, the Michigan State Baseball team returned to Big Ten Conference play this weekend with a three game home series over the Ohio State Buckeyes. The Spartans, who ranked in the middle of the Big Ten standings before the game was able to take the first two games of the series before failing to finish off the sweep on Sunday.
