Thanks in large part to an anonymous contribution of near $1.4 million from a Spartan alum, Michigan State University announced that lights will be installed at McLane Stadium at Kobs Field, the home of MSU baseball and Secchia Stadium, the home of MSU softball, in preparation for the upcoming 2019 season.

While defensive end Adam Berghorst and receiver Jase Bowen aren’t the highest-rated prospects Michigan State signed on Wednesday, they are two of the most interesting. Berghorst and Bowen will become the first football players to moonlight on the baseball diamond in Mark Dantonio’s tenure as head football coach.

Michigan State baseball began its trip to the Dominican Republic on Saturday, Dec. 15, the Spartans’ first of five days.MSU began the day by boarding the bus at Jenison Field House with a 4 a.m. ET departure to the Detroit Metro Airport. The Spartans flew from Detroit to Chicago O’Hare, then boarded their flight to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.

Spartan Baseball Headed To Dominican Republic
Michigan State baseball will take a foreign trip to the Dominican Republic, departing Saturday, Dec. 15 and returning Thursday, Dec. 20, after finals at MSU. While in the Dominican Republic, the Spartans will play six games against Dominican Republic teams and will participate in community service. The Spartans will do some painting and house repairs in the village of Boca Chica, where the team will be staying.

Michigan State baseball’s late-inning rally came up short in the 12th annual Crosstown Showdown Presented by Auto-Owners Insurance, falling to the Lansing Lugnuts, 6-4, on Tuesday night at a hot and humid Cooley Law School Stadium. A spirited crowd of 6,388 was on hand to watch the annual exhibition game and home run derby.

Dakota Mekkes in the mix for September call-up by Cubs
The 6-foot-7, 250-pound right-hander, who played at Michigan State, has plowed through the minors to this point. He has a 1.58 ERA in 22 games at Iowa, the Cubs’ Triple-A affiliate, with 24 hits allowed in 28 1/3 innings. He has struck out 34 and walked 14, which has led to a higher whip (1.34). He has three saves, a hold and a blown save.

Former MSU baseball player to manage 12U national team
Todd Fine, a former Michigan State baseball player, will lead the USA 12U national team in the COPABE Pan-Am “A” Championship. Fine lettered as a player for the Spartans in 1993 and 1994.Since playing for the Spartans, Fine has bounced around the national baseball scene both coaching and scouting. Most notably, Fine served as an area scout for the Houston Astros and was named the Amateur Coach of the Year in 2014 by Baseball America.

Baseball Earns ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award For Second-Straight Season
Michigan State baseball was recognized with the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Team Academic Excellence Award for the second-straight year. Michigan State had a 3.21 GPA this year, which is the second-highest in program history, only behind last year’s 3.22. The Spartans were the only Big Ten team on the 46-team list for NCAA Division I teams.
