So much for No. 3 Michigan State’s quest to win Tom Izzo’s first Maui Invitational. The Spartans nearly made a miraculous comeback in the final 4 1/2 minutes Monday. But they did themselves in early with turnovers, fouls and defensive breakdowns. And Virginia Tech did them in late with clutch baskets and a 3-point assault, handing MSU a 71-66 loss on the opening day of the Maui Invitational at Lahaina Civic Center.

Landers Nolley II hit a big 3-pointer in the final minute and scored 22 points, helping Virginia Tech hold off No. 3 Michigan State, 71-66, at the Maui Jim Maui Invitational on Monday inside the Lahaina Civic Center. Sophomore Aaron Henry led the Spartans with 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting. Junior Xavier Tillman grabbed a game and career-high 14 rebounds to go with nine points for the Spartans.
