The XFL is returning in 2023 and several players with Michigan ties are on rosters. All eight franchises participated in the XFL Draft on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Teams selected from a player pool of 1700 players, each vying for 528 spots in training camp and 400 active player roster spots.

With the NFL Super Bowl being played Sunday, you know what that means! It’s XFL time baby! No, seriously, it’s XFL time. For the first time in 20 years, the XFL will kick off with a newly redesigned league on February 8th. MSU Football had six players drafted back in October, and of those, four of them are on rosters to start the season.

None of the other Spartans landed with the Houston Roughnecks, who took quarterback Connor Cook No. 2 overall in the skill player phase of the draft on Tuesday. A pair of MSU products are linking up with the Dallas Renegades, however, as the franchise selected safety Kurtis Drummond in the fourth round of the defensive back phase and wide receiver Keith Mumphery in the first round of the open phase when all players were available.

Connor Cook became Michigan State’s highest-drafted quarterback since Earl Morrall on Tuesday when the Houston Roughnecks selected him with the No. 2 skill position pick in the inaugural draft of the rebooted XFL.

Four Spartans are among the initial batch of players in the XFL’s draft pool: quarterback Connor Cook, wide receiver Keith Mumphery, safety Kurtis Drummond and offensive lineman Miguel Machado. More MSU products could be in the draft pool, too, as the league is announcing more names every day through Friday.

Early indications are that XFL 2.0 aims to be a more legitimate operation than the first iteration — both led by WWE’s Vince McMahon — with Oliver Luck in place as commissioner. The league is holding tryouts in each of its eight cities this summer as it progresses toward its debut in February 2020, and a few Michigan State players have turned up to try to find a home in the spring football league.
