That’s when things start to really feel official. Xavier Tillman posted this picture on Twitter, revealing he would be No. 23. Jackson Jr. posted a better picture of him with his new number. He will be donning the No. 2 this season.

Xavier Tillman balances school, basketball, fatherhood
The Aim High Sports facility rocked more and more with each dunk from Michigan State’s Miles Bridges on Thursday night. The Spartans sophomore star hammered an alley-oop off the glass, threw down a between-the-legs jam and pounded home a putback to win the game as time expired. Fans who came to see the Moneyball Pro-Am show leaped off the bleachers with phones in hand, filming the wild scene. At least one person stayed put. Michigan State incoming freshman big man Xavier Tillman had played in the game but remained sitting with his 7-month-old daughter, Ayanna Justis.

Nick Ward offering guidance for freshman Xavier Tillman
Tillman played on the Blue team with MSU teammate Kyle Ahrens and spent most of the game battling fellow Michigan State big man Nick Ward, who was on the Silver team. The two will go at it often in practice going forward, and the freshman will probably take his lumps, like he did a few times Thursday. But it’s all a positive learning experience for Tillman, who has been taking tips from Ward on and off the court.

Way-too-early frontcourt preview for 2017-18
The 2017-18 Michigan State basketball team will look a lot different than the one that took the court in last year’s NCAA Tournament. While the Spartans only lost one player that played significant minutes in a tournament game (Alvin Ellis III), they’ll go from one of the shortest teams in the country (ranked 289th in average height according to KenPom) to likely somewhere in the top 100.

Xavier Tillman got engaged during ‘the best week of his life’
Xavier Tillman committed to Michigan State in September. But it’s not the biggest decision the high school senior has made in the last year. Tillman, a 4-star power forward in Michigan State’s 2017 basketball recruiting class, got engaged to his girlfriend over the weekend. In an Instagram post, he called it part of “the best week of his life.”

Michigan State will feature best front court in Big Ten next season
Last year Michigan State was dominated on the boards often. Teams like Purdue simply had too much size for the Spartans to keep up. That’s why Michigan State lived and died with the three ball. That won’t be the case next year in East Lansing.
