Former Michigan State quarterback Tyler O’Connor gave professional football a shot.Now he’s moving onto a different challenge, probably one in the business world. Earlier this summer, O’Connor had a week-long tryout with the Cincinnati Bengals, but he didn’t earn a contract offer.

Four Michigan State graduates Matt Macksood, Benny McGowan, Tyler O’Connor and Josiah Price have been named to the 2017 National Football Foundation (NFF) Hampshire Honor Society. The NFF Hampshire Society is comprised of college football players from all divisions of play who each maintained a cumulative 3.2 GPA or better throughout their college career.
With two degrees to his name and a hectic schedule cleared from the calendar, Tyler O’Connor woke up one January morning to a revelation. The self-described busybody suddenly found himself in the unfamiliar position of having time to kill – a lot of it. So, he started scouring the job market for positions that would fit his preferred lifestyle of staying on the go – “making things happen,” as he said.

Tyler O’Connor turned to another former Michigan State quarterback to help guide him toward a potential pro future. The Spartans’ most recent starter spent the early part of this year working out with Drew Stanton in Arizona. O’Connor hopes that work with the longtime NFL backup and a number of other pro quarterbacks will aide his chance to join them.

The process of going from college to the NFL is filled with questions. Pro teams want to know all the details, large and small, about players who want to continue their career. They ask insightful questions, silly questions, offensive questions, completely irrelevant questions. Sometimes just to gauge how a prospect reacts. Winning cures everything. It can shift one’s perspective dramatically because ultimately, football is a wins and losses business. It isn’t the only thing that determines a quarterback’s value, but it definitely factors heavily into the equation. The last 10 quarterbacks drafted in the first round won at least eight games in their final college seasons. All but two of the first-round quarterbacks since 2010 accomplished that feat.
