It was an early April evening back in 2015 and Tum Tum Nairn sat in the back of Michigan State’s locker room at Lucas Oil Stadium, head down and tears flowing from his eyes. The Spartans had just lost to Duke in the national semifinals, capping a Final Four run not many people saw coming. It came on the heels of seniors like Travis Trice and Branden Dawson, both willing Michigan State to the pinnacle of college basketball a year after it came up a game short with a team everyone expected to make it.

Michigan State Basketball’s annual media day was today and the day was full of words from Tom Izzo and all of the Michigan State basketball players. MSU basketball is going with two captains this year, Tum Tum Nairn who is Michigan State’s first three year captain since Draymond Green. The other elected captain is Miles Bridges, who Tom Izzo praised for how he has handled all the media spotlight surrounding his decision to come back to school.

Nairn is a suffocating defender, a relentless speedster and one of Izzo’s greatest leaders in 22 seasons at the helm of MSU’s program. Winston is crafty, a potentially dangerous shooter and, if you ask Izzo, the Spartans’ most dazzling passer since Magic Johnson held court in East Lansing.

MSU’s backcourt holds it back from being consensus No. 1
A backcourt with one of the most well-respected team captains in college basketball coming off of the bench (Nairn) to assist two budding players – one of the nation’s former top prospects (Langford) and the player who arguably has the best set of passing skills in college basketball (Winston) – doesn’t sound like a “problem” to most. But behind Nairn, there’s not much depth after that. McQuaid and Ahrens are the only players left on the roster that can get legitimate time in the rotation in the backcourt, and even Ahrens will see a lot of his minutes at small forward.

Michigan State players remember pain of Middle Tennessee, impart wisdom on younger teammates
Matt McQuaid remembers the moment vividly. It was last March 18 when No. 15 seed Middle Tennessee State led No. 2 Michigan State by nine points with 5.1 seconds left in the first, and last, game for the Spartans in the NCAA Tournament. McQuaid and Kyle Ahrens, both freshmen, ran up opposite sidelines as the Spartans raced for the final shot of the game, however unnecessary.

How Tom Izzo’s shapeshifting rotations are unique, and not changing anytime soon
The Spartans’ top three lineups are playing 31.0 percent of the minutes. Heading into a home date with Ohio State (15-11, 5-8 Big Ten) on Tuesday night (9 p.m. TV: ESPN), over the last five games, MSU most prevalent lineup — by a slight margin — has been Tum Tum Nairn, Eron Harris, Joshua Langford Kenny Goins and Miles Bridges. It’s played 11.8 percent of MSU’s minutes. There have been varying forms of that lineup with Nick Ward, Cassius Winston, Matt McQuaid and Alvin Ellis III joining the rotation, but none have played more than 11 percent of the time together as a singular unit.
