Lourawls “Tum Tum” Nairn has landed his first head-coaching job. The former Michigan State point guard, who has spent the past two years with the Spartans as a graduate manager, is off to Sunrise Christian Academy to lead the school’s post-graduate basketball team.

No stranger to Michigan State or to the Breslin Center, Lourawls “Tum Tum” Nairn Jr. has joined the men’s basketball staff as a graduate manager, Head Coach Tom Izzo announced today.”I can’t say enough about how excited I am to have Tum Tum back here,” Izzo said.
Travis Scott’s “SICKO MODE” blares through the Madison Square Garden speakers and Tum Tum Nairn shouts every word into Mikal Bridges’s grill. While his rap-along effort, coupled with a right hand blanketing the Phoenix rookie’s eyes, pales in comparison to the havoc Nairn once brought atop Michigan State’s defense, it adequately readies the lottery pick for battle against the Knicks.

Lourawls “Tum Tum” Nairn’s affection for Michigan State is well-documented, so it’s no surprise he’s content with hanging around the Lansing area while he figures out his next steps in life. “I’ve just been here chilling,” said Nairn, who graduated this spring with a degree in communication. “Just chilling and working out, really.”

The Big Ten announced on Thursday the 28 honorees named Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners for the 2017-18 academic year. Lourawls “Tum” Nairn Jr. of the men’s basketball team and Jamie Cheslik of the women’s soccer team were selected as Michigan State’s honorees.

Former Spartan Lourawls “Tum Tum” Nairn Jr. did not have the same path of playing basketball compared to his teammates. After moving from his home in Nassau, Bahamas when he was only 13 years old, he continued his new passion on a path that he said he knew God had made for him.

Tum Tum Nairn arrived at Michigan State and immediately became the starting point guard on a Final Four Team as a freshman. His greatest assist, however, might have come by giving up the job as a senior. And that is saying a lot about Nairn, one of the Spartans’ rare three-time captains in program history who has been credited with everything from helping to recruit to getting Miles Bridges to come back for a second season.

Tyus Jones was Tom Izzo’s Plan A, Tyler Ulis his Plan B. Tum Tum Nairn, well, he turned into Plan C when Izzo needed a point guard in his 2014 recruiting class. There was room for Gavin Schilling in 2013 when Jabari Parker spurned Michigan State for Duke. Izzo signed Ben Carter as a grad transfer in 2016 because Deyonta Davis surprised him by leaving for the NBA. MSU’s senior class was anything but MSU’s first choice.

Time is going quickly for Tum Tum Nairn these days, and the Michigan State senior is well aware. After practice this week, the point guard was talking about the No. 1-ranked Spartans resuming Big Ten play on Thursday night against Maryland and contemplating what it would mean to win a conference championship. “I’m looking forward to it a lot,” Nairn said, “especially for me, it being my last year and already playing two Big Ten games.”

Nairn is their heart and soul, and he happens to be one of two players on the roster who have been in this spot before. He and fifth-year senior forward Gavin Schilling both were key members of the rotation in the 2015-16 season, the last time Michigan State was ranked No. 1.

Had he enjoyed celebrating by himself, Lourawls “Tum Tum” Nairn would have have been a track athlete. Initially, Nairn figured he’d train for the Olympics and use his athletic prowess to climb out of poverty. But the first time the Nassau, Bahamas, native broke the tape in a sprint, he looked around and realized that winning big is no fun when you’re doing it alone. Then he turned to basketball.
