Parks Gissinger is now more comfortable navigating campus. Trent Gillison is relieved to have orientation out of the way and classes scheduled. Oh, and there was also some football mixed in. Gissinger and Gillison were among the members of Michigan State’s 2018 signing class on campus last week for a freshman mini-camp while getting acclimated to college life.

Xavier Henderson and Trent Gillison were teammates at Pickerington Central High School in Ohio. They were both four-star prospects and both signed with Michigan State’s 2018 class on Dec. 20. Gillison, a tight end, is finishing the school year at Pickerington Central, in part to play his senior season of baseball. Henderson, a safety, chose to be an early enrollee and arrived at Michigan State in January to begin classes and working out with the team.

When Michigan State hosted an invite-only camp in mid-June, the fields outside the Duffy Daugherty Building were swarming with players. Some were merely hoping to get the attention of coaches, others were there trying to land a scholarship offer while a small group was putting in work at their next home. That included Trent Gillison and Xavier Henderson, teammates at Pickerington Central High School in Ohio who were already committed to Michigan State’s 2018 class and hard to miss.

Gillison, a four-star recruit from Pickerington Central in Ohio, had a close encounter with Detroit Cass Tech linebacker DeAndre Square in the third quarter of Thursday’s high school opener at the Glass Bowl in Toledo.

Trent Gillison was in middle school when he realized his athletic potential could take him further than most. He had played football since age 4 and worked on his game but knew it was time to double down. So, he and a few teammates decided to start waking up at 5 a.m. three days a week to train with high school players. They went through the same lifting, agility and speed workouts as the varsity guys and Gillison still maintains the early-morning workout regimen to this day.
