  • Three players still vying for MSU cornerback job following Josiah Scott injury

    The loss of starting cornerback Josiah Scott to injury early in fall camp marked the biggest adversity this Michigan State team has faced through the preseason. But among the rest of the cornerbacks on Michigan State’s roster, not a lot has changed in the weeks since then. “We were already competing, everybody was competing,” junior cornerback Josh Butler said. “You just have to step up to play well. Everybody in the room can play. You just have to go out there in practice and in camp.”

  • Freshmen tracker: Tre Person’s debut and first start for Kevin Jarvis

    Each week of the nonconference schedule, the number of true freshmen playing for Michigan State expanded. That trend continued in the Spartans’ Big Ten opener – a 17-10 win against Iowa on Saturday in East Lansing. Tre Person, a true freshman defensive back, made his college debut at safety.

  • Michigan State signee Tre Person’s music aspirations influenced by a former Spartans DB

    Curtis Daniel had a succinct message for Tre Person upon hearing his protege had committed to play football at Michigan State. “Get some boots.” Daniel comes from Los Angeles and played as a cornerback for Michigan State in the early 1990s. Now he owns Patchwerk Recording Studios in downtown Atlanta. And long before Michigan State showed interest in Person, a 3-star cornerback for Westlake High, Daniel took the senior Spartans signee under his wing.

  • Freshmen who could see the field for Michigan State football this fall

    Josiah Scott became one of the spring game stars. Hunter Rison and Jack Camper both gave fans a sneak peek at their skills as well. Those were Michigan State’s three early enrollees. But the Spartans could be counting on a few more true freshmen to help rebound from last year’s 3-9 debacle.

  • Michigan State hopeful it found steals in late 2017 recruiting class additions

    When Harlon Barnett pulled up his Twitter mentions one day in late November, one phrase in particular caught his eye: “6 FT 2” Those were the first four characters in a tweet sent to Barnett by Charles Flowers Jr., the father of three-star California defensive back Emmanuel Flowers. Included in the tweet was a link to Flowers’ highlight tape of his senior season.

  • Spartans stock up on defensive backs who could see immediate action

    Mark Dantonio’s program has been built around strong defensive backs. And Michigan State targeted the secondary as an area of need in recruiting. The Spartans added four scholarship players and a preferred walk-on from four different states during last week’s signing day, and Dantonio and his staff raved about each of them potentially contributing immediately.

  • How Spartans found Emmanuel Flowers, Tre Person, Laress Nelson

    Michigan State’s 2017 recruiting class wasn’t completed until head coach Mark Dantonio was nearing the end of his National Signing Day press conference. Emmanuel Flowers, a two-star defensive back from Chino (Cali.) Ruben S. Ayala, signed and sent in his National Letter of Intent minutes before Dantonio got to the portion of his presser where he planned on talking about the 6-foot-2, 175-pound prospect. That was fitting in a way, as Flowers was one of a few recruits the Spartans didn’t get in on until late in the process and managed to sign.

  • Handing out superlatives for the Spartans’ 2017 class

    Michigan State wrapped up National Signing Day on Wednesday by bringing in 20 guys to join the Spartans’ three early enrollees. MSU’s 2017 class isn’t as highly-rated as its 2016 counterpart, but head coach Mark Dantonio said Wednesday that the Spartans filled needs and feel good about the athleticism and versatility they added to their roster.

  • Trieu: ‘Underdog’ Tre Person a perfect fit for Michigan State

    While other kids were doing combine after combine and playing 7-on-7, Tre Person was training. That may have been part of the reason his recruitment did not take off until late in his senior year, but he is a better player for it and Michigan State’s class is better for it.

  • Quick recruitment makes Tre Person the latest Michigan State defensive back recruit

    Tre Person entered his senior year at Westlake High School near Atlanta with no Power 5 offers but a request from some schools that were interested in him. To that point, Person had largely played safety and an outside linebacker role that included coverage responsibilities for his high school team. But some coaches wondered how he would fare at cornerback, so the Georgia native gave it a shot in his final high school season.

  • Michigan State nets commitment from two-star Georgia CB Tre Person

    Tre Person, a two-star cornerback from Westlake High School near Atlanta, announced his verbal commitment to Michigan State on Sunday. Person was previously committed to Georgia Southern.
