Michigan State football wanted to send its seniors out a winner. And Brian Lewerke finished his career with some more records. The senior making his 38th and final start became the third MSU quarterback to win two bowl games and the fourth to pass for more than 8,000 yards in his career, as the Spartans hung on to defeat Wake Forest, 27-21, on Friday in the Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium.

Michigan State ended a disappointing season on a high note. The Spartans (7-6, 4-5 Big Ten) topped Wake Forest (8-5, 4-4 ACC) 27-21 in the Pinstripe Bowl on Friday at Yankee Stadium in New York. It was their third straight victory and their first time accomplishing that feat since beating Washington State in the Holiday Bowl to close the 2017 season.

For one afternoon, the frustration of a long season disappeared. Overcoming a pair of red-zone turnovers in the second half, Michigan State closed its season with a win over Wake Forest, 27-21, in the 10th playing of the Pinstripe Bowl Friday at Yankee Stadium. Heading into Friday afternoon’s Pinstripe Bowl, Brian Lewerke was just 222 yards shy of becoming Michigan State’s all-time total yardage leader, surpassing Connor Cook. It was fitting because even though he didn’t have much in terms of accomplishments and wins to show for his numbers, he still got the job done. He gave the program everything he had, fought through adversity and became a record holder in the end.

His 366 total yards on Friday — he had 46 rushing yards and a touchdown to go with his passing numbers — moved him past Connor Cook as the all-time leader in total yards at 9,548. Lewerke also finishes his career ranked fourth in touchdown passes (47), fourth in passing yards (8,293), second in completions (721), third in rushing yards for a quarterback (1,255) and third in wins (22-16).

The post-practice hug line of coaches and players on the final session before a bowl game has been a tradition for Michigan State under Mark Dantonio. In 12 of the past 13 seasons, the Spartans have made a postseason game. And when the seniors exited the field at Fordham University after a Christmas Day workout, with the Pinstripe Bowl their swan song two days away, things got emotional. Even for Dantonio.

Mark Dantonio went into Pinstripe Bowl preparation mode wanting to give his younger quarterbacks “meaningful snaps” in practices. Come Friday, when the Spartans face Wake Forest, Dantonio has simplified the strategy. “From our quarterback situation, we’re gonna play to win,” he said at a Thursday news conference in the Bronx. “So whatever quarterback gives us the best chance to do that as we move forward, that’s what we’ll do.”

The Spartans (6-6, 4-5 Big Ten) will face Wake Forest (8-4, 4-4 ACC) in the Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium in New York on Friday (3:20 p.m., ESPN). It will be the first meeting between the programs and the first appearance in the Pinstripe Bowl for each.

Though the Demon Deacons have been off the radar, they have won more games than any ACC team the past four seasons other than perennial league champion Clemson. They opened the season 5-0 and got to 7-1 before injuries began to take a toll and they closed the regular season with three losses in four games.  Wake Forest also has won three straight bowl games under coach Dave Clawson for the first time in school history, tied for the fifth-longest active streak in FBS.

Obviously, this season didn’t go as planned on the football field for the Michigan State Spartans. But after finishing 6-6, MSU finds itself playing in the Pinstripe Bowl in the Bronx this week, with a chance to finish the 2019 season with a winning record.

Perhaps a call to Harlon Barnett is in order. The former Michigan State football assistant, Florida State’s defensive coordinator the past two seasons, has faced Wake Forest’s offense twice. And Barnett agrees with his former boss Mark Dantonio that the “Clawfense,” named after Demon Deacons coach Dave Clawson, is out of the norm.

Michigan State Football is in New York for the Pinstripe Bowl to face off against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. The Spartans are 6-6 on the year and the Deam Deacons are 8-4 on the year.

Heck, it’s a long way from November. But adjusting to the frigid temperatures is required when your last game of the season will be outside in New York, deep into December. There’s only one way to go about it: Embrace it.

Extra bowl practices are vital to a football program’s development. And Michigan State football needs all the work it can get this month. Beyond their 6-6 record going into a Pinstripe Bowl matchup against Wake Forest, the Spartans are preparing to lose at least seven starters on defense, along with starting quarterback Brian Lewerke and wide receiver Darrell Stewart.

It’s not the Rose Bowl. Or the College Football Playoff. For Michigan State football fans, a late December trip to the Pinstripe Bowl feels like a letdown. Even coach Mark Dantonio said it is not where the Spartans want to be. For Wake Forest fans, though, there is plenty of excitement. Even if it means going north, instead of somewhere warm.

The New York Yankees welcomed Michigan State and Wake Forest for an introductory New Era Pinstripe Bowl press conference inside Yankee Stadium on Tuesday. MSU Athletic Director Bill Beekman and head coach Mark Dantonio joined Wake Forest Athletic Director John Currie and head coach Dave Clawson, along with representatives from the Yankees and New Era, for a 30-minute live televised press conference on the YES Network.
