Tight end Noah Davis submitted his name to the NCAA transfer portal Friday, according to a source. He is the latest member of the Spartans to enter the student-athlete marketplace, joining linebacker Brandon Bouyer-Randle, running backs Connor Heyward and La’Darius Jefferson, as well as receivers Weston Bridges and Cam Chambers.

Injuries were among the numerous factors that played into Michigan State’s demise last season. This fall, the No. 16 Spartans (6-1, 4-0 Big Ten) have dealt with injuries – just like every team in the nation – but been healthier overall. That has helped them earn a spot tied with Penn State and Ohio State for first place in the Big Ten East Division.

Matt Sokol will be adjusting to a new role this season as the most experienced player in Michigan State’s tight end room. Entering his junior year with two catches in 26 games played, Sokol will be the leader of a group featuring a redshirt freshman, two true freshman and a transfer from Buffalo competing to fill the shoes of Josiah Price and Jamal Lyles.

The parade of freshmen on the Spartan Stadium field may not be quite as prolific in 2017 as it was in 2016. But if Michigan State’s spring game on Saturday is any indication, the Spartans’ youth movement isn’t exactly over, either.

Michigan State had nine true freshmen see the field last year, a record during the Mark Dantonio era. With that, the Spartans have a number young players entering 2016 with some game experience. For others, they had to wait. The Spartans brought in 20 scholarship players in the 2016 class, meaning 11 of them didn’t play in a game last season. So Saturday was an introduction of sorts for them, as well. Here are redshirt freshmen who appear poised to step up following Saturday’s spring game.
