Michigan State’s big men aren’t quite as big anymore
They’re still Michigan State’s two big men, to be sure. But Nick Ward and Xavier Tillman aren’t quite as big as they were last season. And that’s just fine with Spartans coach Tom Izzo.”They’ve done an unbelievable job with their bodies, both of them,” Izzo said after Tuesday’s practice.

Izzo, Spartans see big change in big man Nick Ward
Ward has been pushed plenty in his first two seasons with the Spartans. First it was the shed a few pounds from his 6-foot-8-inch frame, then it was to be a complete player, contributing on both ends of the floor. So, when it came to leadership, that was normally handled by others. However, things took a turn this offseason.

Nick Ward, Xavier Tillman will be twin towers
Spartan fans were understandably excited to learn of Nick Ward’s offseason decision to return to Michigan State for his junior season. Ward’s decision will likely result in more wins, and wins are generally more fun to watch than losses, but opposing coaches will grittily seek to kill the team’s entertainment-value by constantly and unapologetically double teaming the ultra-proficient big man.

Following a game in the Moneyball Pro-Am, Tillman was talking to media members outside the locker rooms at Aim High Sports in Dimondale. The Michigan State sophomore was asked about the possibility of sharing the same frontcourt this season as Ward, his junior teammate. “We talk about that, I think, either every day or every other day and we argue who’s going to play the 4 (power forward),” Tillman said with a smile, “and I think I’m going to play the 4 and he’s going to play the 5 (center).”

After testing NBA waters, Nick Ward plans to take game to ‘a completely new level’
Nick Ward spent his Thursday night at the opening of the Moneyball Pro-Am, playing for free in front of a few thousand fans a few miles down the road from Michigan State. He could have just as easily been just about any NBA city preparing for the NBA summer league, where he most likely would have earned a spot had he chosen to leave school go pro. The line between those two places was a thin one.

What Nick Ward’s return means for Michigan State
Ward may not have been quite ready for the NBA jump this year. But he’s still one of the better low-post scorers in college basketball, and should take another step forward as a junior, particularly with the Spartans losing their top scorer in Miles Bridges.

Michigan State basketball needs Nick Ward, jilted by NBA, to be all in
Nick Ward waited until nearly the 11th hour to decide to return to Michigan State for his junior year. You can read that a number of ways. One, that he was holding out hope he’d hear from some NBA team, any NBA team, that there would be a place for him in their organization, even if largely in the G-League early on. Two, that he was trying to get everything he could out of the NBA draft process before making a decision.
