Montae Nicholson does not believe the shoulder surgery he had in March will affect his ability to get on the field for training camp for the Washington Redskins. “They said I’m ahead of schedule and said it’s looking good,” the former Michigan State safety told reporters in the nation’s capital. “I’m just excited to just keep doing rehab, get down there and start getting to work.”

Montae Nicholson made an unexpected decision to leave Michigan State a year early for the NFL, but the move ended up landing him as one of the first picks on the third day of the draft. Nicholson was picked in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft on Saturday afternoon, going No. 123 overall to the Washington Redskins. He becomes highest-picked former Michigan State safety in the NFL Draft since 2006, when Eric Smith went in the third round.

Montae Nicholson was four-star safety recruit coming out of high school where he was the number one ranked high school player in the state of Pennsylvania according to Prepstar, who also listed him as a top 100 national recruit. He was also a 3x state champion in track and field (60 meters, 110 hurdles and 400 relay), as well as a 4th place finisher in the long jump.

Michigan State’s streak of producing first-round NFL Draft picks is over. Malik McDowell isn’t sure what the flood of emotions will feel like when he hears name called sometime Thursday or Friday in the NFL draft. As for McDowell’s mother and some of his friends, well, they have an idea how he’s going to react. “Everybody thinks I’m going to cry,” McDowell said Wednesday during a visit to Shriner’s Hospital with fellow draft prospects. “I don’t know.
