Mike Tressel stepping into new solo role
It’s a position for which Mike Tressel has been groomed. The question is, where will Michigan State’s new defensive coordinator be inside Spartan Stadium come game day? Tressel and Mark Dantonio will have that figured out when the lights come on for the season-opener against Utah State on Aug. 31. Until then … “We’ll have him up and down and all around to try and figure it out,” Dantonio said. “It’s about where he’s most comfortable and where I’m most comfortable.”

Mike Tressel now runs Michigan State’s defense but the mindset is unchanged
Mike Tressel is entering his 12th season as a Michigan State assistant coach. He’s still coaching linebackers and, while speaking with members of the media on Tuesday night, is as animated as usual. However, there’s a big difference from the previous 11 years. It’s now his defense. Tressel was promoted to solo defensive coordinator in January and is calling the plays. Just don’t expect him to make a big deal about the promotion.

MSU defense expects smooth transition after coaching shift
For the first time in 14 seasons coaching with Mark Dantonio, Michigan State defensive coordinator Mike Tressel will be the sole defensive play-caller and coordinator, jobs that for the last three seasons he had shared with Harlon Barnett, who took the defensive coordinator job at Florida State in January. Tressel talked to the media about his expanded role after practice Tuesday.

Mike Tressel takes over Michigan State’s defense but doesn’t expect much change
The last time Mike Tressel called plays, it was 2001. That was at Wartburg College, a Division III program in Iowa. And, that was as the offensive coordinator. Tressel has spent the last 15 years of his career focused on defense and is now in charge. He was promoted by coach Mark Dantonio to Michigan State’s defensive coordinator after sharing co-coordinator duties with Harlon Barnett for the last three seasons.

Tressel ready to ride solo coaching Spartans defense
Mike Tressel knows what it’s like calling the plays. Of course, the last time he did that he was calling the offense in 2001 at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. Back then, Tressel was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at the Division III school.

Mark Dantonio announces changes to Michigan State coaching staff
Mark Dantonio said Friday he has filled one of the three open assistant jobs on Michigan State’s football staff and made official another promotion. Dantonio said Paul Haynes signed a contract to become the Spartans’ new defensive backs coach. Haynes was fired after five seasons as Kent State’s head coach in November, and former MSU assistant Don Treadwell was Haynes’ offensive coordinator with the Golden Flashes.
