Well, the redshirt freshman is two games into his Michigan State career and is still waiting for the first shot at getting three points for the Spartans.     With so many games coming down to the wire, getting consistent kicking is key and the Spartans have quite the competition. Redshirt freshman Matt Coghlin might be the leader at this point, but fifth-year senior Brett Scanlon and true freshman Cole Hahn are also in the mix as well as freshman Jack McKenna, who also is punting. Special teams coordinator Mark Snyder said late last week things were too close to call.

    Football season begins a week from Saturday for Michigan State, and the only thing Matt Coghlin can control is his own performance. The rest is a waiting game. Coghlin, a 5-foot-9, 188-pound redshirt freshman from Cincinnati, is competing with fifth-year senior Brett Scanlon and true freshman Cole Hahn for the starting kicker spot. Coghlin said he hit a 52-yard field goal in the team’s scrimmage on Friday. “It was good to see it go through,” Coghlin said, grinning.

    A close game, just seconds left on the clock and Michigan State needs a field goal to win. It is a scenario that could play out as early as the Spartans’ season opener against Bowling Green on Sept. 2. Just who they would send out to take the kick is still uncertain. Michigan State special teams coach Mark Snyder gave no hints last week and said all four kickers – Matt Coghlin, Cole Hahn, Brett Scanlon and Jack McKenna – were on even ground.
