Matt Coghlin returns but Michigan State has big improvements to make on special teams
Matt Coghlin in 2018 set a Michigan State record with 18 consecutive made field goals. The kicker’s name also came up plenty the following season but for the wrong reason as he went through an extended slump for the first time in his career. Coghlin rebounded for a solid 2020 season and isn’t done. He is using the extra season of eligibility the NCAA gave all fall sports athletes due to COVID-19 and returning for a sixth year with the program.

Matt Coghlin returning for sixth season
Matt Coghlin is coming back to Michigan State football. Again. The kicker announced via Twitter on Wednesday he plans to take advantage of the extra year of eligibility and return for his sixth season in East Lansing. He joins fellow fifth-year senior defensive end Drew Beesley in confirming he will use the bonus year, while defensive end Jacub Panasiuk also is expected to return this fall for his fifth season.

Matt Coghlin already owns Michigan State records but is set on expanding range
Matt Coghlin has already logged memorable moments in his first three years at Michigan State. The redshirt junior placekicker drilled a game-winning field goal as time expired to lift the Spartans to an upset victory against Penn State on a wild day in 2017. He split the uprights on clutch kicks at home and on the road, owns program records and even became the envy of all kickers with a touchdown run on a trick play last season.

Michigan State placekicker Matt Coghlin has been named to the 2019 Lou Groza Award Watch List, announced Wednesday by the Palm Beach County Sports Commission. Coghlin is one of 30 players for the Groza Award, which is given annually to the nation’s top collegiate placekicker.

Five Spartans have been named to The Associated Press All-Big Ten team, as voted on by a 27-member panel consisting of writers and broadcasters who cover the Big Ten. Junior defensive end Kenny Willekes, who also a first-team All-Big Ten honoree by the coaches and media, garnered first-team AP accolades, along with junior nose tackle Raequan Williams. Junior linebacker Joe Bachie, sophomore placekicker Matt Coghlin, and junior cornerback Justin Layne picked up second-team honors.

Matt Coghlin named semifinalist for Lou Groza Award
Matt Coghlin already owns a program record and is also gaining national recognition. The Michigan State redshirt sophomore on Thursday was named one of 20 semifinalists for the Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award. Three finalists will be announced on Nov. 20 and a winner will be named on Dec. 6. The award has been presented annually since 1992 and Michigan State has never had a winner.

Matt Coghlin Named Big Ten Co-Special Teams Player of the Week
For the second time in his career, sophomore placekicker Matt Coghlin has been named the Big Ten Co-Special Teams Player of the Week. Coghlin scored on a 6-yard touchdown run on a fake field goal in the third quarter to give MSU a 28-7 lead over Indiana, becoming the first Spartan to score a touchdown and then kick the PAT on his own TD since Sam Williams in 1958 against Wisconsin.
