After working under four different head coaches — Nick Saban, Bobby Williams, John L. Smith and Mark Dantonio — Ken Mannie decided to retire at age 67, publicly announcing his decision on Feb. 13, one day after MSU introduced Mel Tucker as its new head coach. Jason Novak was hired two weeks later to oversee the weight room Mannie roamed since Saban brought him to East Lansing in December 1994.

As Michigan State began a new era in football this week with the hiring of Mel Tucker as its next head coach, the program is saying goodbye to one of its longest-tenured contributors. Head strength and conditioning coach Ken Mannie announced on Thursday he is retiring after 25 years at Michigan State, capping a coaching career that spanned 45 years.

Blake Bueter hasn’t even appeared on Michigan State’s depth chart through the first two weeks of the season. The offensive lineman is, after all, just a redshirt freshman who joined the program as a walk-on. Make that, former walk-on. Bueter was one of two players put on scholarship Monday, along with redshirt junior long snapper Ryan Armour.

Michigan State surprises Ken Mannie with Holiday Bowl trophy
It takes a lot to surprise Ken Mannie. It takes even more to impress him. But Michigan State’s longtime strength and conditioning coach was feeling both Tuesday. Mannie was awarded the Admiral U.S. Grant Sharp Trophy aboard the USS Essex during the Spartans’ visit to see the amphibious assault ship. The award is given annually to a member of each team participating in the Holiday Bowl who displays “unselfish commitment, motivation, and teamwork that ultimately leads to the team’s overall success.”
