  • Michigan State’s 2018 early enrollees ready to get to work

    Michigan State has 20 players committed to its 2018 class, which is No. 21 in the nation according to 247Sports Composite rankings, and coach Mark Dantonio expects them all to sign during the new early signing period, Dec. 20-22. At least seven of them are scheduled to be early enrollees in Dimitri Douglas, four-star quarterback Theo Day, four-star defensive back Xavier Henderson, four-star cornerback Kalon Gervin, three-star wide receiver Julian Major, three-star receiver Javez Alexander and three-star linebacker Edward Warinner. They will be on campus for the start of spring classes on Jan. 8.

  • Aftershock of Kalon Gervin’s decision, state titles for Spartans commits

    What a weekend for Michigan State. The football team, ranked 16th in the nation, accepted an invitation to play in the Holiday Bowl. The men’s basketball team, No. 3 in the nation, beat up on Nebraska to start 1-0 in Big Ten play. And on Saturday night, the Spartans landed their highest-ranked cornerback commit in the history of the 247Sports composite. Four-star Detroit Cass Tech cornerback Kalon Gervin, the 20th-ranked senior cornerback in the nation, pledged to the Spartans over Oregon, ending a lengthy recruiting process.

    Michigan State football is trying to create a pipeline at Detroit Cass Tech.Although Michigan has landed some of Cass Tech’s top prospects in recent years, most recently five-star receiver Donovan Peoples-Jones and four-star defensive back Jaylen Kelly-Powell in the 2017 cycle, the Spartans continue to pursue Technicians senior defensive back Kalon Gervin and junior running back Jaren Mangham.

  • Spartans expect lots of visitors for Notre Dame, including former Irish commit

    In every cycle, we see a few recruitments that drag out longer than it seems they would. In Kalon Gervin’s case, that means good news for Michigan State. Gervin, a Detroit Cass Tech senior cornerback, started taking unofficial visits to Michigan State as a freshman. The Spartans offered him during his sophomore year, but eventually, he committed to Notre Dame.

    As far as the 2018 class goes, there is not a higher rated uncommitted recruit in Michigan than Kalon Gervin. Ranked No. 2 in the 247Sports Composite rankings, the speedy defensive back obtained a ton of interest from schools across the country, collecting 40 offers along the way.Having committed to Notre Dame at one point, Gervin has since decommitted and now has a list of five schools that does not include the Fighting Irish. Michigan State is one of the schools that made it into the final five.

  • This week in MSU recruiting: A second crack at a big-name in-state cornerback recruit

    Michigan State has a second crack at a big-name in-state cornerback recruit. Kalon Gervin, a four-star cornerback from Cass Tech, announced his decommitment from Notre Dame on Saturday afternoon, ending a commitment of just less than three months. Gervin made multiple visits to Michigan State before his commitment to the Irish, the latest coming two weeks before that commitment.

  • Trieu: MSU begins chase for top 2018 talent

    Michigan State just completed its 2017 recruiting class a week ago, but the Spartans are already off to a fast start in the 2018 class with three commitments. Those three commits — cornerback Xavier Henderson, tight end Trenton Gillison and wide receiver Joseph Scates — are all from Ohio and all four-star prospects. There are also a number of other targets the staff is working hard on.
