Michigan State football players will do anything to train for NFL draft
When the coronavirus pandemic canceled his pro day and left him without a gym to train at, former Michigan State football cornerback Josh Butler turned man’s best friend into man’s best workout partner. In an effort to stay in shape for prospective NFL teams ahead of this month’s draft, Butler has been doing daily workouts — sometimes three a day — with his dogs, Roxy and Remi.

Josiah Scott went down with a knee injury in preseason camp, and Michigan State’s revamped No Fly Zone secondary appeared grounded. Enter Josh Butler, whom coach Mark Dantonio compared to former Spartans star Renaldo Hill before last season’s opener against Utah State. Butler lived up to that billing over MSU’s first three games, until suffering an injury against Indiana.

Cornerback Justin Layne left after his junior season for the NFL draft and was picked in the third round by the Pittsburgh Steelers. That gives the Spartans an open starting spot opposite junior Josiah Scott, and Josh Butler is the frontrunner to take it.

Scott, Butler close to returning for banged-up Spartans
Michigan State could be getting some help soon in the secondary. While the offense has suffered most of the lengthy list of injuries this season, cornerback was the first to take a hit back in preseason camp when sophomore Josiah Scott injured his knee and ended up having surgery to repair a meniscus. His replacement, junior Josh Butler, was injured in the victory over Indiana in Week 4 and has been slow to return.

The biggest on the defensive side of the ball is confirming junior cornerback Josh Butler will start in place of the injured Josiah Scott, who is likely to miss at least the first four games. He’s backed up by sophomore Tre Person and freshman Kalon Gervin. At defensive end, sophomore Jacub Panasiuk got the nod over sophomore Drew Beesley and junior Matt Seybert. At the other end, junior Kenny Willekes is backed up by redshirt freshman Jack Camper and junior Justice Alexander.

Josh Butler played just hours after father died and emerged stronger
Not long before leaving the team hotel to make the short gameday walk to Spartan Stadium last November, Josh Butler got a call. The Michigan State cornerback’s grandfather told him his father, Steven, was headed to the hospital. A few minutes later, Butler learned his dad died unexpectedly at age 51.

The loss of starting cornerback Josiah Scott to injury early in fall camp marked the biggest adversity this Michigan State team has faced through the preseason. But among the rest of the cornerbacks on Michigan State’s roster, not a lot has changed in the weeks since then. “We were already competing, everybody was competing,” junior cornerback Josh Butler said. “You just have to step up to play well. Everybody in the room can play. You just have to go out there in practice and in camp.”

Who will Michigan State turn to with CB Josiah Scott injured?
Josiah Scott was going to have to sit out the first half of Michigan State’s season opener against Utah State on Aug. 31. That was the result of the cornerback being ejected for targeting in the fourth quarter of the Spartans’ Holiday Bowl win against Washington State last year. By NCAA rule, Scott will still have to miss the first half of his next game, but it’s now unclear when that will be.

Michigan State cornerback Josh Butler is thanking Michigan State fans for an outpouring of support after his father died suddenly over the weekend. “Just want to thank my Spartan family for supporting me through this tough time in my life,” Butler wrote on Twitter on Sunday. “I’m going to continue wearing the last name my father gave me proudly on my back! Thank y’all.”

Michigan State parents, players provide donations after death of CB Josh Butler’s father
Those around the Michigan State football program have joined together to help one of their own. The father of Spartans cornerback Josh Butler passed away unexpectedly Saturday, and according to a Go Fund Me page, he didn’t have insurance to cover funeral expenses. The funeral cost is $5,000, according to the page. In about 15 hours, $6,135 had been raised for the funeral service, which is scheduled for Friday. Among the donors are current and former Spartans players, and parents of those players.

As Michigan State players and coaches made their traditional pre-game team walk the length of the Spartan Stadium field linked arm-in-arm on Saturday morning, Josh Butler trailed behind.The redshirt sophomore cornerback went step-for-step with coach Mark Dantonio and then addressed the team in a huddle near the south end zone. That came just shortly after Butler found out his dad, Steven Butler, died unexpectedly.

Josh Butler has short memory as young secondary gains experience
Bowling Green wide receiver Datrin Guyton got behind Butler and hauled in an over-the-shoulder pass for a 45-yard gain down the sideline before being tackled out of bounds. Butler’s reaction to losing the one-on-one battle? “They’re on scholarship too, they play football too,” Butler said. “Plays will happen, but I just got to come back and keep making more plays.”

If Michigan State is to return to some semblance of its famous “No Fly Zone” secondary, it will be with some experienced new starters at safety and potentially a few young players at the corners in 2017.
