Spartans Hold Annual Pro Day
The Michigan State football program hosted its annual Pro Day at the Duffy Daugherty Building on Monday. Eight players from the 2018 team – offensive guard David Beedle, linebacker Andrew Dowell, cornerback Justin Layne, defensive tackle Gerald Owens, linebacker Jon Reschke, running back LJ Scott, tight end Matt Sokol and safety Khari Willis – auditioned in front of National Football League scouts and personnel in preparation for the upcoming NFL Draft.

Linebackers a ‘good situation’ for Mark Dantonio, Michigan State
The old saying in football goes, if you have more than one quarterback you don’t have a quarterback. Or, at least, it goes something like that. Of course, the idea is that if one doesn’t stand out, that means none of the quarterbacks will excel. That same theory doesn’t apply to the linebacker position, and at Michigan State, the feeling is the Spartans have plenty of options to anchor a defense that finished second in the nation in 2017 in rush defense, allowing just more than 95 yards a game.

Michigan State linebackers want to become best blitzers in Dantonio era
Michigan State’s group of linebackers is so deep this fall they needed a bigger meeting room. The Spartans’ linebacker meetings during the team’s preseason camp have had nearly 20 players at times. A group that size couldn’t fit in the normal linebackers room in the Duffy Daugherty Building, so the group at the center of the Spartans’ defense had to take over a room formerly occupied by the defensive line to have enough space.

Previewing the linebackers for 2018
Junior middle linebacker Joe Bachie is the leader of the group. He is coming off a junior season where he tallied 100 tackles, including 8.5 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, three interceptions and 3.5 sacks. Moreover, he was voted team MVP, the first sophomore since Drew Stanton in 2004 to win the award.

Entering his sixth season, Reschke has been welcomed back by coach Mark Dantonio and the players after leaving the program in early 2017 after directing a racial slur toward a former teammate. Dantonio said he and his coaches watched Reschke’s interactions with his teammates closely. They studied them. They looked for signs of possible fissures — and for signs of forgiveness, too. “Forgiveness is power,” said Dantonio, speaking Tuesday in Chicago at Big Ten media days. “So (Reschke) asked for forgiveness, and the players have given him that.” That’s a word we don’t hear enough of these days, frankly. Jon Reschke to transfer after making ‘insensitive’ comment
Jon Reschke is transferring from Michigan State after making what he called “an insensitive and totally regrettable comment” involving a former teammate. Reschke released a statement to the media on Friday night in which he says he and the program mutually decided that he will complete his degree at Michigan State and then seek a graduate transfer for next season.
