Michigan State football watched yet another player enter the transfer portal Friday. Linebacker Jeslord Boateng joined the exodus out of East Lansing, following offensive lineman Devontae Dobbs and cornerback Davion Williams. Boateng, a redshirt sophomore, arrived from Dublin, Ohio, as a three-star prospect in the 2018 signing class.

When Michigan State landed 2018 Dublin (Ohio) Coffman linebacker Jeslord Boateng, the Spartans knew they would be getting a super-athletic prospect. Boateng, a track star, sprints like a defensive back, but he has rare size to go with that speed. Having put on more than 15 pounds since last season, he stands 6-foot-2 and weighs 213 pounds.

The Michigan State Spartans had a hot recruiting month in June, with six recruits from the 2018 class committing to the program – Davion Williams, Dimitri Douglas, Zachary and Jacob Slade, Javez Alexander and Jeslord Boateng. The latter, Jeslord Boateng, took the time to speak with me recently and he is next up in our Commitment Spotlight series. He is a three-star outside linebacker from Dublin Coffman High School in Dublin, Ohio.

Michigan State has had some great linebackers come through their program under Mark Dantonio and his staff, and a good number of them have come from Ohio. Not many of those players also ran track in high school, though. Denicos Allen did, running on his Hamilton High’s relay team at 6-foot-0, 210 pounds. That is what makes the Spartans’ newest commitment, Dublin Coffman’s Jeslord Boateng, a different and exciting prospect. Boateng goes 6-foot-3, 210 pounds and not only runs on the track team, he is a sprinter, competing in the 100- and 200-meter dash events, as well as the relay team.

Dublin (Coffmann High), Ohio linebacker Jeslord Boateng announced via social media that he has committed to Michigan State. The 6-foot-3, 200-pound prospect is ranked 43rd in the nation and fifth in Ohio at his position by Scout.com. Boateng’s announcement brings MSU’s 2018 recruiting class to seven.

Before prospects announce their college destinations, many of whom will do so this summer, they’re narrowing down their choices. At least six class of 2018 prospects released finalist lists in the last seven days that included Michigan State, giving the team a sense of who it has the best shot at landing between now and signing day.

Who will join Olentangy Liberty (Powell, Ohio) junior Edward Warinner in Michigan State’s linebacking corps? Warinner gave the Spartans their first linebacker commitment of the 2018 class, and now they have been pushing for an outside linebacker to join Warinner, who will shore up the middle. Quite possibly their top choice would be another Ohio product, St. John’s Jesuit (Toledo, Ohio) OLB Dallas Gant.

On Wednesday, he was offered a scholarship by the Spartans, a moment for which he had been waiting. A 6-foot-2, 210-pound senior-to-be who is also on the track team, Boateng is an athletic prospect who already has familiarity with the Spartan football program.
