Heading into the 2017 season, Michigan State is very young, meaning a lot of freshman and sophomores will get the opportunity to play. MSU’s 2017 recruiting class was ranked 35th nationally and sixth in the Big Ten per 247Sports. The class has a few gems, but who will shine as a freshman? Max Lapthorne, Grant Essenmacher and I take a look at potential freshman that could make an impact.

While college basketball is getting younger and younger, success on the football field still requires a strong base of experience. The Spartans, on the other hand, are looking at a season where they will be dependent on freshman.

Josiah Scott became one of the spring game stars. Hunter Rison and Jack Camper both gave fans a sneak peek at their skills as well. Those were Michigan State’s three early enrollees. But the Spartans could be counting on a few more true freshmen to help rebound from last year’s 3-9 debacle.

“Elbows!” Jeff Richardson yelled over the blaring music at Acceleration Sports Performance. Jacub Panasiuk knew exactly what he meant. As he casually power cleaned 225 pounds — more focused on proper form and repetitions that maxing out — he didn’t have to look to his left to know to whom those words had been directed.

Jacub Panasiuk’s path was influenced by his brother Mike, but not dictated. The distinction has to be made. When he offered Jacub in January 2016, Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio made sure Jacub knew that it came on his own merits, not because Mike would be signing with the Spartans the following month as a defensive lineman.

Nine freshmen played in a football game for Michigan State in 2016. That would be nine real freshmen. You know, the ones that are in their first year at college. We’re not talking about the ones that got two semesters of learning the ropes of college life under their belts as a redshirt before seeing the field. They’re still young and inexperienced, but not like real freshmen.

Michigan State introduced us to 22 new scholarship players on Wednesday, when it unveiled its 2017 recruiting class on national signing day. Now, the question is how many of them we’ll meet again this fall on the field at Spartan Stadium.

When he committed to Michigan State last summer, Jacub Panasiuk joked that the Spartans had a leg up in his recruitment all along. It had a key recruiter living one bedroom down from him. Jacub’s older brother, Mike, committed to the Spartans’ 2016 recruiting class. Jacub eventually listened to the pitch from his older brother decided to join him as a member of Michigan State’s 2017 class.
