Change of heart: MSU defensive end Jacub Panasiuk says he’ll play this season after all
Senior defensive end Jacub Panasiuk, who decided on Aug. 5 to opt out of the season, has chosen to opt in and will play this fall, a team spokesman confirmed on Friday. It came soon after Panasiuk posted an action photo of himself with the message “October 24 … #GoGreen.”

Upon his arrival as Michigan State’s newly-hired defensive ends coach last February, Chuck Bullough’s first tip to Jacub Panasiuk didn’t require a video screen, a whiteboard or a whistle. Just a chair. When Panasiuk sat down, part of his mid-section bulged over the lip of his shorts, and Bullough had a teaching point right away. “I looked at him, he had rolls here,” Bullough said, motioning toward the top of his waistline. “I was like, ‘At D-end, you can’t have rolls.’”

Panasiuk brothers speak Polish as secret weapon against opponents

Previewing defensive ends for 2018
Kenny Willekes returns for his junior season, coming off a very strong sophomore season that saw him go from unknown former walk-on, to one of the best defensive ends in the Big Ten. He was selected third-team All-Big Ten last year, after leading the team in sacks with seven, and tackles for loss with 14.5. He had 73 tackles, which ranked second in the Big Ten amongst defensive linemen and he played in all 13 games, including 12 starts.

Heading into last season, defensive end Kenny Willekes was a former walk-on who had bounced around positions and appeared in just one game. Wide receiver Felton Davis had only 14 catches for 200 yards and one touchdown in his first two seasons. Michigan State’s true freshman paused for a fraction of a second before swallowing up the wide receiver for a 7-yard loss. “It was amazing when I stood up and could just feel the vibration of the crowd,” Panasiuk said. “It was unbelievable.”

With a jab of his right foot, Western Michigan quarterback Jon Wassink sent running back LeVante Bellamy in motion. He also immediately drew the attention of Michigan State defensive end Jacub Panasiuk. So, when Bellamy took a handoff from Wassink, Panasiuk didn’t engage Western tight end Donnie Ernsberger. He set the edge and then swallowed up Bellamy in the backfield for seven-yard loss.

A text message popped into Mark Staten’s phone, a memory of years gone by and a reminder of what’s still to come. It was sent by Matt Allen. The Michigan State offensive lineman attached a photo of himself as a chubby, young teenager. He was standing with oldest brother, Jack, when he was about the same age at Spartan Stadium. Before Jacub Panasiuk started high school, he admits that he and older brother Mike — like many siblings — didn’t get along all that well. Eventually, when Jacub was a sophomore, there was one thing that finally brought the two brothers who are just a year apart together, and that same thing has reunited them again at Michigan State.
