A trio of former Spartans are in the running to join an elite club. The ballot for the College Football Hall of Fame’s 2023 class was announced on Monday morning and includes former Michigan State offensive tackle Flozell Adams and former coach Darryl Rogers. Additionally, former Spartan Gideon Smith is on the ballot as a divisional coaching candidate.

The 2022 College Football Hall of Fame ballot features the same Michigan State representatives as last year. Former MSU offensive tackle Flozell Adams, kicker Morten Andersen, and head coach Darryl Rogers are all up for enshrinement again in 2022, as is former MSU player Gideon Smith, a divisional coaching candidate for his career leading Hampton.

Gideon Smith, Michigan State University’s first black athlete, is on the College Football Hall of Fame ballot for the first time. Smith is listed under the Divisional Coaching Candidate category for his career at Hampton University, where he coached from 1921-40. He led Pirates to the 1922 Black College National Championship and recorded four Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association titles and two unbeaten seasons in his coaching career. Smith remains the longest-tenured coach and second all-time in wins in Hampton history.
