Michigan State junior wide receiver Felton Davis III has been named the Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week for his career performance in MSU’s 17-10 win over Iowa. Davis recorded career highs in catches (9) and receiving yards (114) against the Hawkeyes, and tied his career high with two touchdown catches. In the first half alone, Davis had seven receptions for 88 yards.
On Michigan State’s first snap against Iowa, quarterback Brian Lewerke faked a handoff to Gerald Holmes and connected with Felton Davis over the middle for a 31-yard gain. Two plays later, Lewerke hit Davis for six yards. Then the duo hooked up again for an eight-yard completion.

MSU’s returning receivers and tight ends have a combined 14 career catches between them, all 14 from the expected starters this season. Sophomore Trishton Jackson might be MSU’s best hope for a go-to target. Jackson’s electrifying eight-catch showing in the spring game showed he was capable of being a big-time weapon. Felton Davis, a tall target, and bruising sophomore Darrell Stewart are the other two starting wideouts. Junior Matt Sokol figures to be used heavily in the passing game at tight end. Sokol is 6-foot-6, 250 pounds at faster than his predecessor Josiah Price.

Michigan State was excited to feature Felton Davis III in its passing attack last season. His 6-foot-4 frame was supposed to give the Spartans a tall target that complemented starters RJ Shelton and Monty Madaris. And for about one half of the season opener, Davis was exactly that.

No, Michigan State’s wide receivers coach hasn’t found some new-fangled formula in how to avoid going gray. What he does have is fresh optimism about his position group, one that might be the most unproven on a Spartans team that will be counting heavily on youth and inexperience when it kicks off the season Sept. 2 at home against Bowling Green.

Cam Chambers waited and watched three of his classmates get their chance at wide receiver last season. First, Justin Layne moved to cornerback. Then Donnie Corley was dismissed from the program. Now, Chambers sees a chance to make his impact. “It was tough,” the redshirt freshman said today. “I wanted to help any time. I was eager to get out there. I was on-call and ready to go whenever I was called. ”He’s likely to hear his name very soon.
