Michigan State defense coordinator Mike Tressel filled in for Mark Dantonio on Dantonio’s weekly radio show and gave fans an interesting nugget: former MSU star wide receiver Felton Davis III will be an honorary captain for tomorrow’s big match-up against Penn State.

“We can sit there and people can draw up any type of excuse or reason why a certain person was took to this team or a certain person took to that team. But at the end of the day, you line up on a football field and you’re playing football,” Davis said. “They want all these guys that are blazing fast, that can run past people, or certain things that everybody looks for.

For the first few days after he ruptured the Achilles tendon in his left leg, Felton Davis confined himself to his bedroom. He kept the door to his room closed. He didn’t accept visitors. And he didn’t return any of the 400 or so text messages and 200 or so missed calls he estimates he received on his cell phone.

Felton Davis flashes a smile and it’s a brief glimpse into his personality. The Michigan State senior wide receiver is a self-described “happy-go-lucky” person. He has a sense of humor likely only those close to him can truly appreciate and the air of a man who never experienced a cloudy day, or at least doesn’t bother to notice them.

The All-Big Ten offensive honors were unveiled Wednesday night and the Spartans had just one player picked as senior wide receiver Felton Davis was an honorable mention selection by both the coaches and media. And, Davis played less than seven full games this season before his college career came to an end due to a torn Achilles tendon.

Felton Davis is much more than the Spartans’ most reliable and explosive receiver. He’s a team leader and is showing some pragmatic leadership in the lead-up to a massive opportunity for Michigan State this Saturday at Penn State.

Felton Davis ran an out route in one-on-one coverage and caught a pass from Brian Lewerke on the left side of the field.The Michigan State senior wide receiver spun out of a tackle, sprinted down the sideline and made a quick inside cut to fool a defender before being stopped just shy of the goal line.

Like an 8-year-old, alone in the backyard, fantasizing, Felton Davis and Michigan State’s other wide receivers can sometimes be found lined up a few yards from the end zone on the practice field, pretending.“Last play of the game, Michigan State versus Michigan, on the 3-yard line,” they’ll say to themselves, Davis said. “And Brian (Lewerke) will throw it up and you’ve just got to catch it. Once you get into a real game, it’s really the same thing, but this time there are just people watching.”

Davis finished with only three catches (plus one that was called back), but all three catches were in clutch situations and Davis displayed his gifted athletic ability on each one. Davis ended the day with the aforementioned three catches for 69 yards and a touchdown. He also added a nice catch on a two-point conversion. I think there’s a reason they call him “The Freak.”

Felton Davis felt his dream starting to fade. Two seasons after arriving at Michigan State with high expectations, the wide receiver had just 14 total catches. Reaching the NFL didn’t seem realistic anymore. “It just feels like it just starts to fall away from you,” Davis said.

Through two years at Michigan State, it seemed as if Felton Davis III would be nothing more than a depth piece for the Spartans. He caught a total of 14 passes for 200 yards and a touchdown despite having the tools and potential to be a star in the receiving corps.
